视频简介：《The Little Mermaid》（《海的女儿》，也被译为《人鱼公主》或《小美人鱼》)是安徒生重要的童话作品之一，被无数次改编成动画、儿童剧等。英语启蒙最好的工具就是原版的英文绘本，因此AAE（American Academy of English,简称AAE）特设英语绘本阅读栏目：《The Little Mermaid》，通过故事、语言、画面三方面的结合，持续不断地传授纯正的美式英语口语，有效培养学生的分析运用文本的能力以及交际能力。

Chapter 5
Paying the price
Back beneath the waves, the sisters were decorating the castle for a summer ball.
“Come and help us,” they called to the little mermaid.
She tried to tie ribbons, but she just couldn’t concentrate.
“You’re not still thinking about that prince, are you?” said her eldest sister.
The little mermaid nodded.
“Remember, he’s a man and you’re a mermaid,” her sister went on. “He will only make you unhappy.”
By nightfall, the sea castle looked splendid. Blue flames rose up from pearly white shells, lighting the way from the gardens to the hall.
Guests streamed in, wearing shimmery clothes…
…and a fish band sang gurgling tunes.
The little mermaid pretended to join in, but she couldn’t stop thinking of her prince. “I have to do something,” she thought. “Maybe the sea witch can help me…”
While her sisters swayed to the fish band’s songs, the little mermaid swam away.
It was a dark and dangerous journey to the sea witch’s cave. The little mermaid crossed bubbling hot mud…dodged swirling whirlpools…
…and darted past slimy seaweed arms.
At last, the craggy cave loomed up ahead. The ugly sea witch stood at the entrance.
“So you want legs to impress a prince,” she snapped. (The sea witch knew everything.) “They will cost you dearly.”
“But I have nothing to give you,” said the little mermaid.
“Yes you do,” the witch declared. “Your voice.”
The little mermaid gulped. “But how will I talk to my prince?” she asked.
“That’s not my problem.”
The witch started stirring a potion. “This will split your tail in two,” she said, “and give you human legs.”
“But there are two things you should know,” she added. “One, if you drink this potion, you can never go back to your father’s castle. And two, if the prince doesn’t return your love… you will dissolve into the ocean waves.”
The witch stopped stirring and looked up. “Do you still want to drink it?” she asked.
The little mermaid didn’t pause. “I do,” she replied. They were the last words she ever spoke.
With a wave of her wand, the witch added the mermaid’s voice to her potion.
第五章
付出代价
回到海底，美人鱼姐妹们正在为夏天的舞会装饰城堡。
“来呀，快来帮我们呀，”姐姐们对小美人鱼公主叫道。
她尝试着帮忙绑丝带，但是她绑不好，因为她没办法集中精力。
“你还在想你的王子，是吗？”姐姐说。
小美人鱼公主点点头。
“记住，他是人，你是美人鱼，”她的姐姐继续说道，“他只会让你感到痛苦。”
当夜幕降临时，海底的城堡看上去金碧辉煌。 蓝色的火焰一直从珍珠白的壳里冒出来往上升，把从花园到前厅的路照得通明。
客人们像溪流一样汇入，个个都穿着华美的服饰……还有鱼儿乐队，唱着“咕咕咕”的调子。
小美人鱼装作要加入它们的样子，但是她没法停止想念王子。“我得做点什么，”她想“也许海里的女巫可以帮到我……”
当她的姐姐们在鱼儿乐队的音乐中起舞时，小美人鱼却悄悄的游开了。
去寻找海底女巫的洞穴要经过一段既黑暗又危险的旅途。小美人鱼淌过了冒着泡的滚烫的热泥水…躲过了危险的黑旋流，挣脱了黏人海草的纠缠。
最后，女巫嶙峋的岩洞若隐若现地出现在了眼前。丑陋的女巫正好坐在入口处。
“所以，你想拥有一双腿，来打动王子？”女巫突然开口说道。（她知晓一切的事。）“你需要为此付出昂贵的代价。”
“但是我什么都没有，”小美人鱼说。
“你当然有了，”女巫说道。“你可以用你的声音来交换。”
小美人鱼倒吸了一口气。“那我要怎样和我的王子交谈呢？”她问道。
“那可不是我要去思考的问题。”
女巫开始搅拌一剂汤药。“喝了这剂汤药你的鱼尾就会分开，”她说道，“变成两条人类的腿”
“但是有两件事情你得知道，”她补充道。“第一，一旦你喝了这剂药，你就不能回到你父亲的城堡了。第二，如果王子不能以爱回报你，你会变成海上的泡沫。”
女巫停止了搅拌，看了看小美人鱼，“你还要喝它吗？”她问道。
没等巫婆的话音落下。“我愿意，”她回答道。这也是她说的最后的话。
巫婆摇晃了一下她的魔杖，就把小美人鱼的声音加在了她自己的汤药里。
