53岁的王连生说，他是一百年才出一个的怪人，天性胆小、不爱说话、不合群，由此带来的，便是孤独。

53-year-old Wang Liansheng said he has always been the odd one, owing to his naturally timidand quiet personality. Undoubtedly then, loneliness has been an inevitable part of his life.

他是个乐观的浪漫主义者。开了十多年早餐店，他这样形容自己的生活：将寒冷丢进灶膛里煮成蒸汽，将黑夜倒进锅里熬成黎明。

On the other hand, he is alsooptimistic and romantic. Having run a breakfast shop for over a decade, he described his life as: Boilingthe Cold into Steam as Night Turns Into Dawn.

王连生的早餐店开在鄂州的一条老街上，早餐店卖馍、油条、豆腐脑等。2023年底，他的散文在网络出圈。他最早接触网络是在2018年，5年时间写了30多万字。由于他的散文深受粉丝喜爱，粉丝也与日俱增。面对粉丝们难以抵挡的热情，他也敞开心扉，开始了一场浪漫温馨的网络之旅。

Wang Liansheng's breakfast store,locatedinan old street in Ezhou, mainlysells steamed buns, Youtiao (deep-fried dough stick, a breakfast food), jellied bean curd, etc. At the end of 2023, his prose went viral online. His earliest presence online was in 2018, and in five years, he composed over 300,000 wordsin writing. Owing to the popularity of his prose, hisfanbasesoon grew over time. In the face of the fans’unceasing enthusiasm, he opened his heart and embarked ona romantic journeyof posting his writing online.

Choosingto Readas an Antidote to Loneliness

写作的原点是阅读，王连生阅读经历从儿时开始。他是地道的鄂州人，出生在农村，十几年前做起早餐生意。

Readingis the foundation for writing.Wang Liansheng's experience with reading began inhis childhood. He is a native of Ezhou, born in the countryside, and set up his breakfast business overten years ago.

王连生说，孤独，贯穿了他一生。由此，便有了两个爱好，一是读书，二是写字。对阅读的热爱，起源于一本《波斯短篇故事集》。彼时王连生10岁，一次和父亲经过当地供销社，面对琳琅满目的商品，父亲问想吃什么时，他选择了这本故事书。

Wang Liansheng said, lonelinesshas accompanied himhis entire life. As a result, he adopted two hobbies:one was reading, the other was writing. His love for reading originated from Collectionof Persian Short Stories.Back then hewas 10 years old. Once, when his father passed throughalocal supply and marketing cooperative, packed with all sorts of goods, his father askedhim what he wanted to eat. Wang chose the book.

记忆中，这本书故事情节简单而雷同，但王连生找到了阅读乐趣，看了很多遍。后来倘若家里没有新书，旧书、旧报纸也是不错的选择，实在读无可读了，报纸中缝的广告、说明书都能救急。

In Wang’s memory, though the plotof the book was simple andno different from other books, he found joy in reading itand he reread it many times. Later, if there was no new book at home, old books and newspapers were also good choicesfor him, and when there wasabsolutelynothing left to read, he would even read the advertisements in newspapers and instruction manuals.

阅读似乎成了生理需要，王连生将读书比作吃菜，几乎到了如饥似渴的地步。倘若只有一盘菜，菜吃完了，盘子也得舔干净。

Reading seemedto have become a physiological needfor him.Wang compared reading to eating. If only one dishwas available, once the dish was done, he wouldlickthe plateclean, too.

王连生18岁时，父亲去世。王连生离开高中学校，回到村里。他会经常骑着自行车，从乡下到八十里外的城里。进了城，第一件事，便是绕道去新华书店。后来，他在图书馆办了借书证。

When Wang Liansheng was 18, his father died.He left high school and returned to his village. He often rode his bicycle from the villageto the town, which was80 miles away.When he was in the city, the first thing he did wastotake a detour to the Xinhua Bookstore. Later, he got a library card at the library.

回忆起读书的时光，王连生记得，好几次在图书馆里待到天黑，才想起回家。出了城路左边是九十里长港，路右边是茫茫田野。终于有一次，他连人带车摔进了大坑。

Looking back on his reading days, Wang remembered several times when he stayed in the library until dark, only then realizing it was time to go home. The roadhe took outside the city,to the left,stretched ninety miles alongside the Changgang River, while on the right was bordered with vast fields. Finally, one time, he tumbled into a large pit, bike and all.

有时也会坐客车进城，照例会进图书馆看书到天黑。错过了班车，王连生便步行回家，八十里地，走回家腿都瘫软了，可一看到手里的书，心中便升起力量。

Occasionally, he would take the bus intothecity, and as usual, he would visitthe library and read until it got dark.If hemissedthe bus, he wouldwalk home, which was eighty milesaway. Upon arriving home, his legswould be weak, but seeingthe book in his hand, his heart would be filled with renewed strength.

阅读无法解决现实生活问题，后来王连生决定外出闯荡，临行前在父亲坟前坐了一夜，收拾了行李：一瓶坟土，父亲的身份证，以及他的正音字典。

But one could not earn a living by reading. Later, Wang decided to leave his hometown and find a job. Before leaving, he sat a whole night in front of his father's grave. He also packed his luggage: a bottle of graveyard soil, his father's ID card, andhis dictionary.

外出闯荡并非一帆风顺，回鄂州后他遇到了现在的妻子。2007年，王连生和妻子盘下现在的门面，最初售卖禽蛋，4年后他们改做早餐生意，一直延续至今。

Unfortunately, job-hunting away from home proved challenging. When Wangreturnedto Ezhou, hemet his current wife.In 2007,theytook over theircurrent storefrontand soldeggs. Four years later,they switched to a breakfast business, which they have since run until now.

把心里话揉进面团做成馍

KneadingHis Thoughts Into the Dough

青年时代的王连生，曾在《黄金时代》和广州的《晨报》上发表文章，后因种种原因，并没有太多作品问世。

In his youth,Wang Liansheng published some articles in Golden Ageand the Morning Newspaperof Guangzhou.But due to various reasons, not many works were published and brought to the public’s attention.

王连生真正引发关注，是在2024年1月18日，央视新闻微信公众号发表《这位早餐店主用热气腾腾的文字，治愈无数人》，有人称他为鄂州的“油条散文家”，也有人称他作家。

In fact, Wang Liansheng did not gain significant attention until January 18th, 2024, when an article titled Breakfast Shop Owner Heals Countless People with His Wordswas published on the CCTV News official WeChat account. Some referred to him as the “Youtiao Prose Master of Ezhou”, while others simply called him a writer.

在王连生的文章中，他始终认为自己是“街头贩夫，引车卖浆者流”，他自命是个“文人”，不过要加前缀，“我始终像孔乙己一样，认为自己是个文人。”

In Wang Liansheng’s writings, he always sawhimself as “simply a streetvendor, serving people breakfast and making a living out of it”.He also proclaimedhe was a“man of letters”,but onlyundercertain situations. “I,like KongYiji, always consider myself a man of letters”, he said.(Kong Yiji is a character from a famous short story by Lu Xun, a renowned Chinese writer. In the story, Kong is portrayed as a failed scholar,who still maintained a sense of dignity and pride in his identity as a scholar even in his plight.)

王连生从2018年开始在网上写作，当时家里发生变故，写作成了他宣泄的出口。但他的文字却是浪漫乐观的，他拿自己的开花馒头作比，有人叫它“破馍”，有人叫它“开口笑”，寓意是尽管生活破破烂烂，我们永远要笑靥如花。

In 2018, his family experienced a rough patch and it wasthen thatWang Lianshengstarted to write online.In fact,writing became an outletfor his emotions. Though facing these difficulties, his words remained romantic and optimistic. In his writings, he took a specific kind of steamed bun, which had a split top, as an analogy. Some called the bun a “broken bun”and some thought it had a“smile”, suggestingwe should alwaysmaintain a positive attitude towards life, no matter how hard it became.

写作题材大多是早餐店见闻，和老婆的日常之类，简单的早餐店，平凡的夫妻店主，在他的文字中，一如既往轻松、活泼、真实且富有温度。

Most of Wang’swriting was inspired byhis observations in the breakfast shop and his routine life with his wife. Yet, described in his words, he painted a light-hearted, lively, and warm picture of his ordinary life working with his wife in theshop.

无法掩饰的是，王连生是喜欢鲁迅的，不过他不针砭时弊。他的文字中，呈现出些微自嘲，不乏幽默，有时让人感动，有时让人忍俊不禁。

Wang Liansheng does not deny his admiration for Lu Xun, one of China’s finest authorsand thinkers of the 20thcentury;butunlike Lu,Wang does not critique current issues or pinpoint problems. Instead, his writing carries a slighttouch ofself-mockery, often in a humorous yet sometimes touching way.

熟悉王连生的人知道，他不善言辞，一位粉丝点评：他把心里藏的话，变成文字揉进了面团，炉火加持温度，吃馍的人饥肠得饱，周身暖透。

Those familiar with Wang Liansheng know heisa man of few words. One of his fans commented: “He ponders on his thoughts as he kneads the dough,turningthe dough into bunsand his thoughts into writing. He ishealing and warming the starving soulsof his customers from the inside, not just with his buns, but alsothroughhis writings.”

截至目前，王连生的账号粉丝已达30多万，各地的粉丝通过私信希望邮购他的馒头。他知道购买馒头是假，支持他、爱护他是真。

As of now, Wang Liansheng’s account has over 300,000 followers. They sent messagesfrom allacross the country,hoping to purchase his steamed buns online. Wang knew their interestwas notreally inhis buns,but rather to show support and care.

他曾在文章中记录：从网络订购馒头的人暴增，这让平时就爱记错账的老婆大人的大脑芯片瘫痪。请到店的朋友自助结账，老婆大人只负责装馍，如果装少了下次补，如果装多了，你就飞也似的逃了吧……

He once wrote: “The surge in online orders has made my dear wife, whose efforts at keeping accounts are rarely error free, reach her wit’s end.I am sincerely asking all customers who come to the shop to check outthemselves. My dear wife canonly beresponsible forpacking the buns now. If she packs buns less than what you ordered, we’ll make up for it next time; if more than what you ordered, you better run like a rabbit...”

粉丝们不满足从网络订购，希望到店里来看看。在王连生看来，他写文字只是分享，无意推销馒头，他内心觉得文字一旦变成生意，就变了味，他刻意不告诉粉丝们店址。后来，就产生一个现象，王连生的早餐店火遍全网，但网友却不知道在哪。

His fanswere not satisfied with simply ordering online; they wantedto come to the storeto take a look. Butfor Wang Liansheng, writing was simply a way of sharing his thoughts, not promoting the steamed buns. He feltthat once his writing becameentangledwith the business, it wouldnot feel the same. So he deliberately kept the address to himself, which led to an interesting phenomenon where thebreakfast shop was famous online, butyetnetizens were clueless of its location.

粉丝将他的网络文字打印成书

A FanPrinted His Online Writings Into a Book

王连生社交平台粉丝数不断增长，他的账号涌来密密麻麻的私信，内容多是打听店址和邮购馒头、油条，他不想他的文字变为早餐店“广告”，又不忍拂了粉丝们善意，所以他很少点开。

As his fanbaseon social platforms grew, Wang Liansheng’s inbox was now flooded with direct messages, mainly inquiring about where his store waslocatedand how to buy the steamed bunsand Youtiaoonline. But Wangseldomread these messages because he didnot want his writingsto turn into “advertisements”for the breakfast shopand he also could not bear to turn down the goodwill of his fans.

许多粉丝见私信不生效，便转头进入王连生粉丝群，还有粉丝分析网上的视频画面，通过环境比对，最终找到了王连生的店址。

However, many fansjoined a group chat dedicated to Wang Liansheng’sfans, after they realized that Wang did not read their direct messages. Some fans even analyzed the shop’s surroundings through his video footage posted onlineand finally located his shop.

王连生的文字温暖了粉丝们，同样这一份温暖在双向传递。他的店址被粉丝知晓后，陆续收到各地粉丝们寄来的礼物。

Wang’s words have warmed the hearts of his fans, who returned the favor. After his shop’saddress became known by his followers, hehasreceived many gifts from fans all across the country.

有的寄家乡特产，有的送书，还有一位黄石粉丝送了剃须刀。巧克力、米酒、腊肉、护手的蛤蜊油、精致的小玩具等礼物，寄给王连生的礼物五花八门。

The gifts Wang received ranged from books,chocolate, rice wine,Chinesebacon, clam oil for hand care, small toys, toeven a razor from a fanin Huangshi, a neighbouring city.

最让王连生感动的是一位70岁的汉川粉丝，收录了他在网络平台发布的全部文字，到打印店打印成书，书名是《我的人间烟火》。

What touched Wang most was a70-year-old fanfrom Hanchuan whocollected all of Wang’s writings he had posted online, and compiled them into a booktitled MyEveryday Life.

看过文字的粉丝为了表达支持，邮购馒头会多付一些钱。王连生将对方网名记下，还回去后，又被对方用支付宝或充话费的方式强行送了回来。

Fans who have read Wang’s blogs always paymore on their online orders to support Wang. But Wang often notes down their online usernamesand refunds them the extra money. However, he later discoversthe moneyhas been returned eitherthrough his Alipay (a mobile payment app commonly used across China) or by topping up his phone credit.

文章中，王连生称年轻的粉丝为“小朋友”“宝贝们”。作为回应，粉丝们称王连生“油条大叔”。

In his writings, Wang referred to hisyoungerfans as “kiddos”. In response, the fans nicknamed Wang “Uncle Youtiao”.

王连生说，他是一百年才出一个的怪人，一直在自己的世界里踽踽独行，外人很难走进他的世界。此前就有媒体请求采访王连生，均被他怀着歉疚之心婉拒。

Wang Liansheng said, he has been the odd one who never quite fits in, and is often exploring his own world. So it is difficult for outsiders to getinto his inner world. Previously, he had declined requestsfor interviews from media outlets.

王连生似乎有两套话语系统，一套应对日常生活，十分匮乏；另一套在他的精神世界，谈到文学，谈到写作，他极有热情，略显书生气，却极为丰富。

Wang seemsto have two sets of systems when it comes to communicating with the world: in one set, pertaining to interactionsin his daily life, he is a man of few words; the other ishis innerworld, where he becomes passionateand slightly bookish when discussingliterature and writing.

即便面对极目新闻记者的采访，王连生也会提出：“可否允许敝人以文字的形式接受提问？”

In the interview withJIMU News, Wangeven requested,“MayI be allowed to answer the questions in the form of writing?”

谈及对王连生的热爱，粉丝们各不相同。有创业失败者说只到他店里坐坐，就找到了力量；有读者从他字里行间，看到善良美好而被治愈；还有读者感动于王连生对文学纯粹而执着的热爱；而更多的读者，则感动于他热情、乐观、浪漫的生活态度。

Talking about their love for Wang Liansheng, fans expressed their reasons behind their admiration. Some entrepreneurs who had been unsuccessful said they found strength just by sitting in his store; some readers were comforted by the kindness and beauty of his words; some were moved by his pure and persistent love forliterature; while more readers were moved by his passionate, optimistic and romantic attitude towardslife.

王连生始终未曾远离文学，他自嘲是孔乙己。但网友们不这样看，认为他热爱文学，又懂得如何“活着”，应该算“早餐界余华”。

Wanghas never quit his love for literature and he saidin a self-mocking way thathewas like Kong Yiji. However, netizens thoughtdifferently. Theybelievedthat he was more like Yu Hua, a prominent contemporary Chinese writer, because Wang lovedliterature and he also knewhow To Live(a representative novel ofYu Hua).

随着王连生的故事传开，今年1月底，鄂州市作协已安排专人与王连生交流沟通，了解其创作状况，并将其吸收为鄂州市作协会员。

As Wang Liansheng’s storybecame widely known, at the end of January this year, EzhouWritersAssociation soon engaged in talks withWang to learnmore about his writingsandadmittedhim as a member of the association.
