Different Painting, Different Life, Different Soul

After more than 20 years of hard work, she finally completed her spiritual art project. The creative process is actually the pursuit of a spiritual ideal. It involves the reappearance of certain archetypal spirits such as “Kuafu chasing the sun” and “Nüwa patching up the sky” from traditional Chinese lore. The doll is an immortal spirit, it is a symbol of vitality, a feeling of real happiness in a virtual world. The doll a spiritual symbol, she travels through mankind’s spiritual time space soaring freely in the universe. Every doll is serious, thoughtful, full of passion, vitality and the fantasy of romanticism! Each doll seems to be telling a magical story and the strong Latin American inspired colors give them a strong visual impact. She has combined traditional and modern painting techniques as well as decorative color techniques to create her own unique painting style.

Mao Li's first solo exhibition since coming to the United States was at the Riverside Gallery. Mao Li's Pilgrimage to unfamiliar lands since leaving Beijing, has given her a unique experience and the opportunity to learn about traditional Chinese culture, American culture and native Puerto Rican culture, which she seamlessly combines in her creations. The mask paintings are completely based on local culture. Some mask images have become self-portraits.

The complicated pleated dress in Mao Li’s works are her own original creation through which she intends to express the complex inner emotional world of the character. In her own words, “It represents vigorous vitality, just like the burning flame flowers of my life…
One big painting, fortunately moved my site. One crazy running doll that lingers above a motorcade with tiny cars backed up for miles, and two tiny lone figures on both sides of the painting. Dense electric waves scattered in the air. The painting is full of mystery. She said, “They'll never meet again.” as if to tell you a beautiful legend.

Mao Li says that contemporary artists are enthusiastic about expressing the philosophy of design and form in their paintings. By contrast, she is more concerned with internal source, nature and feelings. She believes that cultivating the mind is the most important. “No matter how the painting tide is surging and changing, what doesn't change is my heart.” She also writes poems, when painting takes a nap, giving her works a poetic aura. Mao Li's states that, “My paintings are very close to my life.” and her passionate works express her unique life.
