At the entrance of Unit 101, Building 32, in the 269 residential community of Zhoujiadun, Jiang’an District, Wuhan, there hangs a small sign: “Please do not disturb after 10 PM”. This sign is specially designed for elderly AuntGui by the local community staff where the residential community is located.
The 73-year-old Aunt Gui’s full name is Yin Xiaogui, a volunteer at the 269 residential community. She is always occupied throughout the day, with her three phones constantly on dial like a hotline for the residents. When disputes arise among neighbors in surrounding areas, they too turn to Aunt Guifor assistance. She says, instead of seeking fame or profit, she does voluntary work for everyone simply because it makes her happy.

The Zhoujiadun 269 residential community was built over 40 years ago and has operated without a professional property management team or an established homeowners’ committee, nor a security guard. Thus, limited parking space and disorderly parking are the biggest problems here.
There are only about twenty parking spaces in this community, barely enough for the residents. However, because the residential community is located close to wholesale markets, vegetable markets, and commercial streets, visiting vehicles frequently drive through causing congestion on both sides of the road. Residents have witnessed many arguments and even physical fights between residential and non-residential vehicle owners, yet none have been able to intervene.
During a voluntary activity, Zhang Jing, the secretary of the community learned about Aunt Gui’s enthusiasm and kindness and then asked Aunt Guiif she would like to participate in community governance as a volunteer, and Aunt Guiagreed readily.
Wearing the volunteer’s red armband, Aunt Guidecided to tackle the parking issue first. During the entirety of August 2021, she stood on guard documenting the relevant information of over 20 residents-owned vehicles and additional information of non-residents’ vehicles. She then visited each vehicle owner in the community and collected their phone numbers to facilitate the management of parking. Early every morning, Gui would coordinate parking in the residential community with a small notebook where license plate numbers and phone numbers were recorded. When residents received a call from Aunt Gui, they would immediately come down to move their vehicles.
After coordinating the vehicles within their residential complex, she also stood at the entrance to dissuade external vehicles from entering. During this time, she would also clean the residential community in the morning, afternoon, and evening, clearing away trash discarded by residents in hidden corners and alleys. After seeing this, residents naturally quit littering, greatly improving the environment of the residential area.
Aunt Gui also noticed that residents returned to the community at different times. Occasionally, vehicles returning at night or visiting vehicles occupied the parking spaces at the entrance, requiring her intervention early in the morning or late at night, which was highly inconvenient.
In early 2022, after discussing with the community and residents, Aunt Gui decided to designate 8 slots for temporary parking in the community for better management. Parking lines and ground locks were quickly installed, and Aunt Gui voluntarily took on the responsibility of managing the keys. Once the regular parking spaces in the community are full each day, residents needing temporary parking must first make an appointment with Aunt Gui, who then unlocks the temporary parking spaces for them.
This newly foundorderwithin the residential community drew praise from residents, who stated “Parking issues have plagued us for decades, but Gui was bent on solving the issue, and she did. It’s truly commendable.”
On June 2nd, a reporter visited the residential communityand saw over twenty vehicles parked neatly and orderly in the parkingspaces. Aunt Guitold reporters that before she retired, she worked as a procurement manager in a hotel. Despite the gruelling workload at her previous job, she managed everything well. “I gained some experience from my previous job. Handling these community matters is nothing to me. Actually, with a bit more time and patience, anyone can do it well,” she said.

Riding an electric scooter for over a year, she freed residents from “carrying gas cylinders upstairs”
Cooking without gas, taking cold showers, constantlyworryingabout gas leaks, and transporting gas cylinderswith difficulty – these were the issues the residents faced due to the old community buildings. When the communitywas designed, no space was allocated for gas pipelines, and the complex underground network made it hard to access natural gaswithin residents’ homes. As a result, for a long period of time, residents had to lug gas cylinders up the flights of stairs.
At the end of 2022, many residentsturned toAunt Gui for help, hoping she could solve the problem of supplying natural gas in the community. Aunt Guireadily agreed and took on the responsibility of coordinating with the gas company, residents, and the pipeline installation unit. Following the decision, she rode her electric scooter to various departmentsduring thedaytime, gathering opinions and requirements. In the evenings, shewent door-to-door to collect residents’ opinions and related feesalong with four members of the community’s Women’s Association. Knowing that Aunt Guiwas leading the natural gas installation, even residents who were initially apprehensive quickly submitted their documents.
However, Aunt Guiwas somewhat overly optimistic about the difficulty of installing natural gas in the old community. The gas company informed her that since the community had not made any related infrastructure plans, and due to the narrow roads, disorderly internal structures, and unauthorized constructions, the installationwould be extremely challenging.
“Where there’s a will, there’s a way!” Aunt Guidid not give up. She took the design drawings of each building and made several trips between the community, the neighborhood committee, and the gas company on her electric scooter. Ultimately, after completing all the preparationsand coordination work with the community, the gas company conducted multiple field surveys and formulated a process and operation plan tailored specifically to the community. At the beginning of 2024, the gas company began installationin the community, and the external gas pipes were installed onto the walls.
Efforts that began in late 2022 with household surveys and data collection, and continued until early 2024 when all the necessary information was gathered, with Aunt Gui personally contacting the natural gas company for surveying, designing, and constructing the pipeline network culminated in the residents’ 40-year dream finally coming true. Many residents hugged her to express their gratitude. Aunt Guisaid that despite the year-long effort, fulfilling the residents’ long-held wish was worth it.
Quick-witted and resourceful, residents turn to “Helpful Aunt Gui” for solutions
After tackling two major issues, Aunt Gui gained popularity withinthe community thanks to hermethodical approach and friendly demeanor. Residents sought her help for problems ranging from upstairs water leaks to personal conflicts.
On April 9th this year, a hotel owner on the ground floor of a building in the neighboring community found Aunt Gui. He reported severe leakage from the upstairs resident Mr. Yang (a pseudonym), which affected their daily operations. Despite multiple attempts by the community to inspect the situation, Mr. Yang rejected their intervention. Aunt Gui then brought in a repair worker and promised Mr. Yang that if the leakage was not caused by his pipes, she would cover all repair costs. When the plumber opened the pipes, Mr. Yang saw that they were indeed corroded and leaking into the ground floor ceiling. He then agreed to replace the pipes and paid for all the repair costs.
In the community, “Ask AuntGui if you need help” has gradually become a common saying among residents. Sometimes, AuntGui even takes on the role of a proactive helper. She noticed frequent pet excrements in the hallway of a particularbuildingwhile voluntarily cleaning the neighborhood. The excrementsbecame an annoyance to unsuspecting residents, who complained:“If you are not careful at night, you're bound to step into dog poop in the hallway. You can only comfort yourself, you just have ‘crappy luck’ that day.”
After muchobservation, Aunt Gui eventually determined that the dog feces belonged to a dog owned by a resident in that building. When she approached that resident,“It’s not my dog’s” was the only reply she received. Without much contention,Aunt Gui simply picked up a pile of feces from the cage at the resident’s door and another from the hallway, and sent both to a testing facility. The results confirmed that both came from the same dog.
The pet’sowner blushed at the sight ofthe test results, “I didn’t expect AuntGui to take this so seriously. From now on, I’ll make sure to clean up my dog’s wasteduring walks.”
Fellow volunteers flock to AuntGui in hopes of emulating her work in their communities
“AuntGui exudes a charisma unique only to her. She can accomplish things that others can’t, and everyone around her listens to her and followsher instructions,” said Chen Xijun, a volunteer from Huamei community, who spoke highly of Aunt Gui, “She is meticulous, methodical, and persuasive.”
Late at night on May 29, a young man in Huamei community threatened to take his life atop a building following a personal dispute. In their panic, the residents thought of AuntGui. When she arrived at the scene, she did not immediately try to persuade theyoung manbut instead initiated a casual conversation with him. After understanding the reasons behind his suicidal thoughts, she patiently consoled him. Eventually, the man willingly came down from the rooftop, and by the time Aunt Gui escorted him home, it was already past 2 a.m.
Aunt Gui often encounters similar situationslike the abovewhere she gets up in the middle of the night to helpresidents. “Marital disputes, disputes among neighbors, and other relational conflicts, these seemingly trivial matters can easily lead to serious consequences if not properly addressed and resolved,” said Zhang Jing, the secretary of the community, “with Aunt Gui’s timely mediation, these situations always have a good ending.”
Aunt Guinot only gives of her time and energy to serve the residents but also often covers the expenses out of her own pocket. Zhang Jing said that the costs range from travel expenses to nearly 700 yuan in phone bills each month. Sometimes, Aunt Gui’s calls to residents last 30 minutes minimum. “She has to charge her three phones in rotation,” Zhang added.
What worries Zhang Jing the most is Aunt Gui’s health, who is a senior and over seventy. Consequently, the community designed two “Do Not Disturb” signsand forcibly hung them on Aunt Gui’sdoor. However, even in recent months, Aunt Gui continues to receive calls for help from residents every other day. Regardless of how late it is, she immediately rushes to the scene to provide assistance.
Zhang Jing finds joy in knowing there are increasingly more volunteers like AuntGui availing themselves in the community. For example, Du Hanzhen and Li Jiarong from Jiayi community, along with Chen Xijun from Huamei community, have worked alongside AuntGui for several months, drawing from her rich experience. They hope to replicate her work and help improve their own communities.
“I currently still have one more wish, that is to stay healthy and push for theinstallment ofelevators in the community,” AuntGui said full of hope.
