A Journalist’s Original Aspiration
I still vividly remember the morning light in Nanchang, always carrying the mist from the Gan River, gently seeping into the editing room of Jiangxi Satellite TV. In those early mornings, filled with the scent of ink, I meticulously polished each program script, leaving no room for error—because I knew that every frame and shot carried the voices longing to be heard.
As a political affairs director for “Jiangxi Reports,” I independently completed the planning and production of two in-depth reports: “Stories from the Rehabilitation Center” and “Where Do the Homeless Go.” To obtain firsthand information, I delved into rehabilitation centers and shelters, confronting the most authentic corners of society. These vivid stories of people’s livelihoods, like seeds, took root deep in my heart, teaching me to feel the pulse of society through the lens. This profession has given me more than just program production skills; it has shaped my unique perspective on observing the world—always remembering to seek the humanistic glimmers folded within the creases of time in grand narratives.
The Journey of a Cross-Disciplinary Explorer
Standing by the window of Vanke’s headquarters in Shanghai, watching planes soar through the clouds over Hongqiao Airport, the familiar roar seemed to cheer on my transition from a media professional to a corporate manager—my heart was surging, yet my steps were firm. From a media person recording the times to a manager overseeing real estate projects, I navigated through the concrete jungle of Shanghai. Over a decade, Vanke provided me not only with a broad development platform but also honed my comprehensive business capabilities. This experience cultivated my systematic business thinking and laid a solid foundation for my subsequent entrepreneurial endeavors.
Starting in 2012, I founded “Vanke Fifth School” and “Imagination Training School,” attempting to integrate real estate thinking with community education, exploring new models of public welfare community education under commercial frameworks. During this period, my journey took me to Stanford University’s innovation lab, Northwestern University’s child learning research center, and several influential NGOs in Hong Kong. Through these cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary practices, I began to deeply ponder: when enterprises possess resources and organizational capabilities, how can they promote the integration of education and community, commerce and public welfare, fulfilling social responsibilities?
This decade-long entrepreneurial practice in “education + public welfare + business” has continuously infused energy and value into my career direction. After arriving in the United States, I still uphold the belief of “empowering people and creating value for society.” I firmly believe that no matter where we are or how our identities change, the resonance of responsibility and value is the most genuine and emotional common language between people.
The Lens of an Expatriate
Before the morning fog in Los Angeles dissipates, I drive through the bustling 210 freeway. As a sales manager at an international logistics company, I am on the front lines of international trade, fully aware that behind every shipment lies the reconstruction of supply chains, cost negotiations, and seamless transoceanic cooperation. I not only provide transportation solutions for clients but also strive to find certainty in a changing economic environment.
The companies I serve span various industries, bearing the pressure of global market fluctuations while actively seeking a “second growth curve.” Among them, the stories of these Chinese entrepreneurs deeply moved me. I realized that beyond data and container volumes, what truly deserves attention are these resilient and radiant Chinese individuals abroad. They are not abstract groups but vivid individuals who constitute the strength of the Chinese people.
Thus, I conceived the idea of creating a program called “LUCY’s West Coast Perspectives,” aiming to document the resilience and brilliance of every overseas Chinese.
A Cultural Bridge
On the stage of the “Global Star” International Qipao Competition, I touched the exquisite Su embroidery buttons on the qipao, feeling the cultural pulse through my fingertips. At that moment, I realized that this was not just a presentation of Eastern aesthetics but also an expression of cultural identity rooted in our bloodline.
While hosting the China-US Economic and Trade Forum, hearing fluent simultaneous interpretation through the earpiece and familiar hometown accents in the audience, I increasingly felt that our generation is destined to dance at the intersection of two cultures, using bilingual thinking and a cross-disciplinary approach to build bridges of mutual understanding and respect.
At the Chinese National Day celebration in California, when the melody of “Jasmine Flower” slowly played, all the Chinese attendees softly sang along, and the blond-haired, blue-eyed audience stood up and applauded. At that moment, I truly understood what cultural resonance means—a deep and natural surge.
These moments constantly remind me that cultural dissemination is never a one-sided display but a two-way dialogue. When foreign friends attempt to say “great” in clumsy Chinese, I see not just successful presentations of Chinese culture but also the communication path paved by generations of overseas Chinese with sincerity and perseverance—a path we have walked for decades, now finally seeing the light of understanding on the other side.
新起点
A New Beginning
In the evenings of San Gabriel Valley, California, I often think of the steaming clay pot soup on the streets of Nanchang during my childhood and the freshly made pan-fried buns in the alleys of Shanghai. These are not just taste memories but cultural roots. Perhaps some people’s destiny is to carry their bags, bringing Chinese stories to the world, and in foreign kitchens, cook homesickness, maintaining emotional connections with the homeland through a spoonful of sauce and a touch of hometown accent.
It is gratifying that in this era of rising self-media and global business restructuring, cross-cultural expressions are being heard and resonated with by more people; stories bearing the resilience of the times finally have their own stage. As Chinese entrepreneurs often say in interviews: “It’s easy to connect goods worldwide, but connecting hearts is difficult.” I firmly believe that true communication is more about understanding and recognition. What I aim to do is to use authenticity and empathy to document every Chinese story worth seeing.
