今年春节前夕，36岁的张嬴娟决定带着上小学的儿子吉米从上海开始骑行，回到位于湖北黄冈的老家。1月17日，母子俩从上海浦东新区出发，带着刚刚放寒假的儿子，开启了他们700多公里的回家路。张嬴娟每天都会拍摄视频记录这次独特的旅行。在她的视频里，有骑行的艰难，也有沿途的风景。1月30日下午3时，耗时14天骑行了700多公里，他们终于平安到家。

As this year’s Spring Festivalapproaches,36-year-old Zhang Yingjuanand her son, a primary school student, decided to embark on a cycling trip from Shanghai to their hometown, Huanggang, Hubei Province. On January 17th, the mother and son set off from Pudong New Area in Shanghai, beginning their journey home of over 700 kilometers. Zhang Yingjuan recorded this unique journey with daily videos. In her videos, she showcased the hurdles they faced as well as the scenery along the way. At 3 p.m. on January 30th, after cycling over 700 kilometers for 14 days, they finally arrived home safely.

今年春节前夕，张嬴娟决定和儿子从上海出发，骑行700多公里回老家湖北省黄冈市英山县，以下是她自述。

Before the Spring Festivalthis year, Zhangdecided to depart from Shanghai with her son and cycle over 700 kilometers back toherhometown in Yingshan County, Huanggang City, Hubei Province. Below is hernarration.

我是个在家呆不住的人，一直在上海市内骑行。2023年初，我就带着儿子吉米开始长途骑行。去年暑假，我带着儿子第一次从上海骑行到北京，中途也翻过山，当时吉米玩得很开心。

I’m someone who cannot stay idle at home and have always enjoyed cycling within Shanghai. In early 2023, I started cycling long-distance with my son Jimmy. Last summer vacation, I took my son on a cycling trip from Shanghai to Beijing for the first time. We even crossed mountains along the way, and Jimmy had a great time.

原本，按计划我们会开车回老公家里过年，但我觉得开车回去也无聊，就干脆决定骑行回家。吉米学校放假早，1月15日就可以放假，我在线上做点小本生意，时间比较自由。我想就带他一块骑吧，顺便也锻炼一下他。

We had planned to drive back to my husband’s hometown for the Lunar New Year. However, I figured driving back would be boring, so I decided to cycle back home instead.SinceJimmy’s winter vacationstarted quite early on January 15th, and I run a small online business, we both have relatively flexible time. I thought I would take him along for the ride and also give him an opportunity to grow as a person.

吉米才上小学，有一点点胖，但他挺喜欢运动，每天踢球两个小时，对骑行也不排斥。我也不想让他在房间里面玩游戏。出发之前一家人在一起商量，他和他爸爸都同意了，我们就开始着手准备。

Jimmy is still in primary school and is a bit chubby, though he enjoys sports. He plays soccer for two hours every day and is not averse to cycling. I also do not want him to spend his time indoors playing video games. Before departure, the whole family had a discussion together. Both Jimmy and his father agreedto the plan, so we started preparingfor the trip.

路线没有特别精确。我们从上海到黄冈，骑行将700多公里，大致的路线是上海-太仓-常州-无锡-镇江-南京-安徽-湖北，一路走的都是国道或省道。

The route was not very precise. We cycled from Shanghai to Huanggang, covering over 700 kilometers. The rough route was Shanghai - Taicang - Changzhou - Wuxi - Zhenjiang - Nanjing - Anhui - Hubei, riding all along national or provincial roads.

原定出发时间是1月15日，吉米拿到寒假作业就出发。不巧的是，吉米在前一天突然高烧38℃多，脸都烧红了，医院诊断为病毒感染，休息了两天，1月17日，我们出发了。

We originally scheduled to set off on January 15th, as soon asJimmy received his winter vacation assignments. Unfortunately, Jimmy suddenly had a high fever of over 38°C the day before and was diagnosed with a viral influenza. He then rested for two daysand we departed on January 17th.

我俩一人分担一点行李。吉米的车驮着防潮垫、衣服，加起来8公斤；我的车驮着防潮垫、帐篷等，加起来10公斤。两人都往行李上放了一个反光条，再用绳子在自行车后座上固定好。吉米还特意带了点山药饼，我带上了修车工具以防万一。临出发前，吉米还特意到迪卡侬购置了一个新的骑行头盔。

We each carried some luggage. Jimmy’s bike carried a moisture-proof pad and clothes, totaling 8 kilograms; my bike carried a moisture-proof pad,atent, and other items, totaling 10 kilograms. We both attached a reflective strip to our luggage and secured it to the back seat of the bicycles with ropes. Jimmy also brought some yam cakes, and I brought repair tools just in case. Right before departure, Jimmy also specifically bought a new cycling helmet from Decathlon.

从上海出发那两天，晴空万里，我们原来乐观地计划，12天就能到达目的地。但让我们没想到的是，接下来几天会遇到那么多困难。

For the first few days after departing from Shanghai, we optimistically planned to reach our destination in 12 days with the bright and clear weather. However, we did not anticipate the numerous difficulties we would encounter in the following days.

冷是我们面临的第一个问题。

Cold was the first challenge we faced.

第4天从无锡新吴区出发往常州方向走时，外面只有4℃。一边刮着狂风，毛毛雨一边打在脸上，我逐渐感觉蹬自行车的脚开始发麻，吉米用我们自带的一次性雨鞋套在鞋子外面，防止透风。接下来几天，气温降至零下，吉米脚上穿了三双羊毛袜，脚还是冻得发麻，只能提前结束骑行，到酒店休息，放热水泡泡脚。

On the fourth day, as we set off from Xinwu District in Wuxi and headed towards Changzhou, the outdoor temperature was only 4°C. A strong wind blew as the drizzle hit our faces. I gradually felt my feet go numb as I pedaled the bicycle. Jimmy covered his shoes with used disposable rain boots we brought with us to prevent the wind from penetrating his shoes. Over the next few days, the temperature dropped to below zero. Despite wearing three pairs of woolen socks, Jimmy’s feet still went numb from the cold, and this forced us to end earlier and check in a hotel where we could soak ourfeet in hot water to warm up.

这么冷的天气，不戴手套骑车，不一会儿就手指冻得通红。吉米先是在苏州路边买了一双劳保手套，让店主用剪刀在手指处剪了一个小洞方便骑行。后来劳保手套也不顶用了，他又买了一个洗碗手套套在外面，但还是很冷，最终买来摩托车手套御寒。我则是一直把手缩在袖子里骑。

In such cold weather, cycling without gloves would quickly turn your fingers bright red from the cold. Jimmy initially bought a pair of work gloves on the roadside in Suzhou, and asked the shop owner to cut a small hole in the finger for easier cycling. However, even the work gloves proved insufficient later, so he bought a pair of dishwashing gloves to wear on top, but it was still cold. Eventually, he purchased motorcycle gloves for better insulation. As for me, I kept my hands tucked inside my sleeves while cycling.

气温低，衣服也要多穿。考虑到穿太厚的衣服不好活动，而且运动出汗后容易感冒，我们采取的是多层穿衣法。气温降到零下的那几天，我俩身上穿了五件衣服，从里到外依次是速干衣、薄内搭、加绒衣、羽绒服、冲锋衣，如果下雨还要加一件雨披。

As temperature lowered, layering clothing became essential. Considering that wearing overly thick clothing would restrict movement and increase the risk of catching a cold after sweating from physical activity, we decided to wear multiple layers of clothing. During the days when the temperature was below zero, we each wore five layers of clothing from the inside to the outside: quick-drying undershirts, thin base layers, fleeces, down jackets, and hardshell jacket. If it rained, we added one morepiece of clothing, a rain poncho.

潮湿是我们面临的第二大问题。

Dampness posed the second issue.

骑出上海后三四天，每天都下着毛毛雨。如果是大雨，我们干脆就不骑了。下个毛毛雨，看着好像能骑，但骑着骑着全身都湿了，这种情况人特别容易失温。

Three or four days after leaving Shanghai, it drizzled everyday. If the rain was heavy, we simply would not cycle. But when it was a light drizzle, it seemed manageable for us to ride in, yet we would end up drenched, and this actually leads to a greater loss of body heat.

骑行第五天，下午3时左右，因为下雨骑行比较慢，我们没有按照计划抵达酒店，而是骑到了附近的一个村子，江苏省常州市武进区洛阳镇东序村。骑了一天，雨水把我们的衣服和帽子都弄湿了，我跑到村委会询问能否有一个地方露营。村民给我指了附近的一个亭子，虽然四面漏风，但好歹亭子地面是干燥的。

On the fifth day, we had to slow down due to the rain. As a result, we didn’t reach the hotel as planned and instead arrived at a nearby village at around 3 p.m, Dongxu Village in Luoyang Town, Wujin District, Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province. After cycling all day, all our clothes and hats were soaked. I went to the village committee and asked if there was a place for camping. The villagers pointed me to a nearby pavilion. Though it was drafty, at least the floor was dry.

我们先在地上铺上防潮垫，搭好帐篷，在附近的公共厕所洗了湿掉的衣服，换上干衣物。两人用自带的保温壶里的热水泡了方便面，用自带的午餐肉作为配菜。当时在那种环境下，我已经很满足了。

We spread moisture-proof mats on the ground, set up the tent, and went to the nearby public restroom to wash our wet clothes and change into dry ones. Using the hot water from our insulated flask, we made instant noodles and had spam as a side dish. Given the circumstances, I was already quite content.

睡前，吉米还在一盏小小的露营灯下读了英语，这是他寒假作业中的一项。

Before going to bed, Jimmy read English under a small camping light. It was part of his homework for the winter vacation.

在亭子里睡了一晚，我们放在外面的东西，包括帐篷里的睡袋都湿透了。

We spent the night in the pavilion, but everything we left outside, including the sleeping bags inside the tent, were completely soaked.

Cycling slowly based on physical condition and witnessing different sceneries

度过最艰难的三天之后，我们到达了南京。1月22日，我和吉米终于从镇江骑到南京。虽然气温是-5℃，路边还有没化的冰块，但天气终于放了晴。我俩吃上了热乎乎的汤包，还买了一副太阳镜作为防护眼镜。

After enduring the most challenging three days, we arrived in Nanjing. On January 22nd, Jimmy and I finally rode from Zhenjiang to Nanjing. Despite the temperature being -5°C and ice still present on the roadside, the weather finally cleared up. We enjoyed warm soup dumplings and bought a pair of sunglasses as eye protection.

按照计划，我们每天骑行40多公里，实际上有时候都骑不到。我们的路线没有特别规划，只是制定一个大致的方向，根据每天的体力骑到哪里算哪里，然后找附近的地方住宿。

According to the plan, we rode more than 40 kilometers each day, although sometimes we couldnot reach thatgoal. We didnot have a specific route planned; we only set a general direction and decided where to stop based on our physical conditioneach day, then found nearby accommodations.

我和吉米每天早上8：30左右出发，下午3：30太阳下山前就结束骑行，有时候中午还休息一两个小时。因为天气原因，下午4时之后气温骤降，感觉冻得受不了，所以我们每天骑行时间并不长。

Jimmy and I would depart around 8:30 in the morning and finish riding before the sun went down at around 3:30 in the afternoon. Sometimes we would take a break for an hour or two at noon. Due to the weather, the temperature would drop significantly after 4 p.m., and it became too cold at that time, sothe time spent cycling each day was not long.

和专业的骑行者不一样，我们往往骑行不到1个小时就得休息。吉米毕竟是小孩，没法像专业的骑行者一样长时间骑，他经常会想要上厕所或者喝水，我们就停下来休息。

Unlike professional cyclists, we often had to rest after riding for less than an hour. After all, Jimmy is just a kid and cannot ride for extended periods like professional cyclists. He would often need to use the restroom or have a drink, so we would stop and take a break.

除了第一天以及在常州露营了两次之外，这几天晚上我们都在酒店住，有时候肚子饿了，就和吉米骑个几公里到附近的镇子上吃饭。所以我拍摄的视频里面，我俩经常在玩或者在拍风景，我们并不赶路。

Except for the first day and two nights of camping in Changzhou, we stayed in hotels during thesepastdays. Sometimes when we got hungry, Jimmy and I would ride a few kilometers to nearby towns to have a meal. So in the videos I filmed, we often played around or captured the scenery; we werenot in a rush.

吉米和我都是第一次走这条路，在路边碰到什么都感觉很新奇，有时候我拍到撒农药的无人机、低空飞行的飞机，路边碰到蒲公英，我们也会停下来吹一下；遇到池塘，吉米会拿石头打水漂。

Both Jimmy and I were taking this route for the first time, so everything we encountered along the way was new to us. Sometimes I filmed drones spraying pesticides or low-flying planes. When we came across dandelions on the roadside, we would stop and blow on them. If we encountered ponds, Jimmy would play ducks and drakes.

接下来要进入山区了，我们马上要面临第三大困难，爬坡。这几天虽然也挺苦，但吉米没有抱怨。他一直还是挺开心的，有时候骑车比我还有劲。到上坡的时候，吉米总是笑我，“爬坡爬得太慢了”。镜头里，他总是“蹭”地一下就骑到前面很远的地方了，留我在后面“哼哧”“哼哧”。

When we were about to enter the mountainous area, we faced the third major challenge: riding uphill. Although these past few days have been tough, Jimmynevercomplained. He has remained happy throughout, and sometimes even had more energy than me. When it came to the uphill sections, Jimmy always laughed at me, saying, “You ridetoo slowly.” In the footage, he always zoomed ahead, leaving me behind, huffing and puffing.

1月30日下午1时，张嬴娟和儿子吉米终于骑行到了湖北、安徽两省交界处，此时距离家中只有20多公里，极目新闻记者在这里见到了他们。站在交界线前，张嬴娟停下来拍视频记录，“终于到达湖北省界了，现在心情很激动。”

On January 30th, at around 1 p.m., Zhang Yingjuan and her son Jimmy finally arrived at the border between Hubei and Anhui provinces. They were only about 20 kilometers away from their home. A journalist from JimuNews met them there. Zhang Yingjuan stopped and recorded a video, saying, “We have finally reached the border of Hubei Province. I'm very excited.”

1月30日下午3时许，张嬴娟和儿子吉米终于骑到了英山县的家门口。他们是1月17日从上海出发的，耗时14天后骑行了700多公里，母子俩终于平安到家了。

At around 3 p.m. on January 30th, Zhang Yingjuan and her son Jimmy finally arrived at their home in Yingshan County. They set off from Shanghai on January 17th and spent 14 dayscycling over 700 kilometers. The mother and son finally arrived home safeand sound.

记者问吉米为什么选择答应骑行，他笑着说：“我是被忽悠来的，妈妈说如果骑行就给我买一部新手机。”但路上，吉米并未抱怨一句，母子俩有说有笑。大多数时候吉米骑行在前，张嬴娟骑行在后，下坡或路面没车时，母子俩还会并驾齐驱，一边骑车一边聊天。

When asked why he agreed to the bike ride, Jimmy smiled and said, “I was tricked into it. Mom said she would buy me a new phone if I went on the bike ride.” However, during the journey, Jimmy never complained, and the mother and son laughed and talked along the way. Most of the time, Jimmy rode ahead, and Zhang Yingjuan followed behind. When going downhill or when there were no cars on the road, they would ride side by side and chat.

回到英山县的家，由于吉米的爷爷、奶奶和爸爸还在上海工作，家里并没有人，提前在门前等候的是吉米的表叔表婶，他们已经开车到家门口，迎接母子俩。

Upon returning to their hometownin Yingshan County, there was no one at home as Jimmy's grandparents and father were still working in Shanghai. However, Jimmy's uncle and aunt were waiting for them in front of the house. They had driven there to welcome the mother and son.

到家后，两人取下帽子，汗水将头发黏在头皮上。吉米的手套都已经磨出毛，这已经是他换的第四双手套了。

After arriving home, the two took off their hats. Their hair had already stuck to their scalps with sweat. Jimmy's gloves were worn out, and it was the fourth pair so far.

“爽不爽？”在家门口迎接他们的表叔表婶问吉米。“很爽！”吉米回答。

“Was it fun?” Jimmy's uncle and aunt, who were waiting for them at the door, asked. “It was super cool!” Jimmy replied.
