Mega-journals: friend or foe?
Wei, Wentao; Slevin, Mark; Zeng, Xianwei
Journal of Aging and Rehabilitation. 1(2):p 29, June 2024.
DOI:10.1097/jagr.0000000000000010
The rise of Open Access journals, exemplified by PLOS ONE and Scientific Reports, has significantly impacted the academic publishing industry. This trend has led to the emergence of mega-journals, such as those published by MDPI and Frontiers, which operate on a high-volume, Article Processing Charge (APC)–based model. Mega-journals can widely impact scholarly evaluation because they contribute citation benefits and improve the evaluation index performance of different scientific entities at different levels.
Challenges of rehabilitation in China
Zhao, Shengjie; Luo, Guangbin

Rehabilitation is indeed a pressing public health issue in China, given the rapid aging of its population and the changing lifestyle patterns. Tu and Wei estimate the need for rehabilitation in China. It was shown that as many as 460 million people experienced conditions that could benefit from rehabilitation. There has been a 70.4% and 75.0% increase in prevalent cases (male vs. female: 69.2% vs. 84.6%) and years lived with disability (male vs. female: 70.6% vs. 78.9%), respectively, between 1990 and 2019.1 There is a significant gap between the demand for rehabilitation services and the current capacity. On the one hand, there is a growing demand for basic rehabilitation services for the disabled, especially for high-quality rehabilitation services. On the other hand, the absence of a national standard for regulating basic rehabilitation services for the disabled hinders efforts to ensure a consistent level of care. To address these challenges, it is imperative to develop and implement national standards for basic rehabilitation services.

Trends and projections in rehabilitation demand across 3 decades in China (1990−2019)

The concept of rehabilitation is changing, and the need for rehabilitation is increasing. Globally, 2.41 billion [95% uncertainty interval (UI), 2.34−2.50] people have conditions that would benefit from rehabilitation in 2019, contributing to the years lived with disability (YLDs) for 310 million (95% UI, 235−392) people, and this number had increased by 63% from 1990 to 2019.1 The study showed that rehabilitation is not a service just for the few and argued that rehabilitation needs to be brought close to communities as an integral part of primary health care to reach more people in need.1 More than 50% of people from some low-income and middle-income countries do not receive the rehabilitation services they need (https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/rehabilitation). World Health Organization Rehabilitation 2030 Initiative highlights the importance of strengthening health systems to provide rehabilitation (https://www.who.int/initiatives/rehabilitation-2030).

Cervical dystonia (CD) is a movement disorder commonly developed in adults. Due to spontaneous intermittent contractions of the neck muscles, patients present clinical symptoms of abnormal head and neck posture and movement. It has been shown that the pathophysiological features of CD can be attributed to 2 aberrant neural processes: dysfunction of somatosensory gating mechanisms involving the basal ganglia, which triggers involuntary muscle spasms, and aberrant processing of proprioceptive information in defective cortico-cerebellar loops, which is likely to affect feedback and feed-forward control of head positioning.
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment modality for medication-refractory CD.3 The most common DBS targets for CD are the globus pallidus internus (GPi) region and the subthalamic nucleus (STN), which have also been reported as effective targets in recent years. Currently, most DBS surgeries carry out the targeted treatment by using bilateral GPi or STN. This paper reports a CD patient who had asymmetric targets for lead implantation (unilateral GPi-DBS combined contralateral STN-DBS).
Outcome of arthroscopic suturing repair of nonretracted full-thickness rotator cuff tears with fast-track rehabilitation

The prevalence of rotator cuff tears is notably high, affecting up to 28% of individuals in their 60s. According to Neer classification, rotator cuff tears are categorized into 4 types. Small tears can be crescent shaped or longitudinal, while larger tears could be “L” or “U” shape, with or without tendon retraction. In larger tears, the couple balance of the glenohumeral joints is disrupted, which affects shoulder joints movement. These tears are usually not difficult to diagnose. However, nonretracted rotator cuff tears often present only with symptoms of shoulder pain with weakness, leading to frequent misdiagnosis. In recent years, with the wide use of arthroscopy, the detection rate of such lesions have been improved and their pathophysiological characteristics are better understood.
Meta-analysis of qualitative studies on older people’s attitudes toward death in a nursing facility

An older person’s negative attitude toward death will adversely affect their physical and mental health. To gain an in-depth understanding of the attitudes of older people in nursing institutions when facing death, this article reviewed the literature and followed up with references for providing better end-of-life care to older people in nursing institutions. Older people in nursing institutions have both positive and negative attitudes toward death. Effective nursing interventions should be provided for older people to help them face death positively and make adequate preparations for death.
