At age 65, Long Changhua, a migrant worker from Fenghuang, Hunan Province, now owns an “art studio”.
The humble “art studio” is located in Wuhan, nearly 700 kilometers away from Long Changhua. This “art studio” is a graduation project titled A Gift for Father created by his son, Long Zhongliang, a graduating student of the School of Sculpture and Public Art of Hubei Institute of Fine Arts.
Despite Long Changhua’s longstanding love for painting, he was unable to pursue education in art. Unbeknownst to Long, this lifelong dream did not go unnoticed as his son finally granted his wish in a unique way.
A Cozy Studio and a Youthful Father
This is undoubtedly Long Changhua’s favorite “art studio”—the warm light from the desk lamp further accentuates the cozy brown tones of the entire room. In the middle of the “room”, the figure of a young father with slicked back hair, wearing a gray scarf and gray shirt, sits leisurely on a brown sofa, holding a paintbrush in his left hand and a palette in his right.
An unfinished painting is placed on an easel next to “him”. The Spiritual Journey to Tianshan Tower, a painting he had done when his son was still a child hangs on a wall behind him.
This art studio is like a sweet dream that Long Zhongliang can actually gift to his father who has toiled for his three children his entire life, moving all across the country. Visitors can easily notice that on one side of the “room”, there is a tablet repeatedly playing the words that Long Changhua said to his son. However, the real father in the video has less hair, more restrained movements, and appears more tired.
“What I made is a figurative sculpture, I didn’t want it to be completely realistic. My father began teaching himself how to paint when he was 7 years old. The family was poor and had nothing, so he put together a few wooden boards and strips to make an easel, and used the unburned charcoal heads at home as paintbrushes. He is even a self-taught portrait painter who set up stalls in many cities! Even after he got married, had children and became a migrant worker, he would still find time to paint in the evening... If my father had a studio back then, would he have done such ‘Hong Kong style’ designs?” Long Zhongliang said that when he was painting the sculpture he had designed and 3D printed, he could relate to his father’s sentiments at the time.
In a video call with his son, Long Changhua said that he really loved his son’s work, but he could not come, “I’m too busy working in the orchard now”.
“My son’s success is success for me too”
Although Long Changhua was unable to make it in person, his words moved the visitors who stopped by. In April, his son had returned home to specifically record a video of him. He was very happy and laughed heartily after saying, “My dream has come true. My son’s success is success for me too.”
The Long family has never lived affluently and was once registered as a low-income household, but Long Changhua never hesitated to help his son realize his dream.
“When I was 5, I already owned a small drawing board that my father had made. He had initially taught me but later invited a teacher to tutor me. The intensive art training and my favorite classes in sculpturing were very expensive, yet, my father never once said anything. Instead, he simply took on more jobs to make ends meet.” said Long Zhongliang.
Completing a sculpture major requires five years, and Long Changhua has only visited his son’s school once. “I am glad he is attending Hubei Institute of Fine Arts and especially since the school is so beautiful and the teachers are outstanding,” he said.
Long Zhongliang did not disappoint his father. During his college years, he received various scholarships and awards, including the first prize National Encouragement Scholarship, the first prize National Grant, the first prize Undergraduate Comprehensive Academic Scholarship, the College Outstanding Writing Award, to name but a few. The total prize money exceeded 60,000 yuan, basically covering his living expenses. “Ever since I started college, I have never once asked my parents for money. I relied on the national student loan to pay for my tuition. If it were not for the various preferential policies in our country and the school, I would not be able to fully concentrate on my dream major.” He said that this is where he was more fortunate compared to his father.
Teachers at the school have equally lent a helping hand to this young man. On May 26, his graduation design instructor Zhang Youkui highly recommended Long Zhongliang’s work in an online post on his WeChat, “Zhongliang said that his father also wanted to be a painter when he was young, and he wanted to tell this story in a narrative way. He interviewed his father, and the video with the local accent matches the scene very well, it is really touching...Congratulations Zhongliang, and for everyone else feel free to stop by the exhibition!”
On June 4, the Jiangxia Youth League Committee invited local officials to visit the exhibition. Tan Wei, vice dean of the School of Sculpture and Public Art of Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, specifically asked the guests to take their time admiring Long Zhongliang’s works, “Long is one of the best graduates in the sculpture major this year. I hope everyone will keep an eye out for his future works and progress!”
