Picture traversing all of Wuhan's landmarks, including Wuhan University, Yangtze River Bridge, and Hankow Custom House, all from the comfort of a modern locomotive. Da Xiong, a local train enthusiast, has turned this fantasy into reality after dedicating a whole year to building a large-scale mini landscape diorama. By integrating the model railways organically into the cityscape, these train tracks that run through Wuhan's landmarks have been drawing train aficionados who hope to test out this unique experience firsthand.

Da Xiong, a 38-year-old train enthusiast, runs a model train club at Zhongnan Road, Wuchang District. He recalls that his parents brought him to the Yangtze River Bridge when he was a child and witnessing a train pass by the Yellow Crane Tower left a deep impression on him. Once, when he was wandering through a shopping mall, he came across a train model exhibition and learned for the first time that train models were not merely static displays, but could also be designed to move. This sparked his fascination with trains, that went beyond watching trains to hunting down trains, and collecting train models. However, running train models required a venue, which was hard to find, a huge hamper to his excitement. Over the years, Da Xiong gradually conceived the idea of designing and building a venue by himself.

Da Xiong is a man of action. He said that the greatest challenge in designing a miniature landscape sandbox lay in the creative concept, meticulously planning the layout and dimensions beforehand. His vision centered around seamlessly integrating moving train models into an urban environment. Deciding where to position tunnels, determining track switches, and navigating tracks to avoid buildings were all intricate considerations that demanded careful deliberation.

Landmarks including Hankou Station, Wuhan University, and Tianhe Airport are incorporated into the diorama
He thoughtfully selected iconic Wuhan sites such as the entrance of Hankou Railway Station, the platforms of Wuchang Railway Station, the Yellow Crane Tower, Hankow Customs House, the Yangtze River Bridge, Wuhan University, Tianhe International Airport, Guishan TV Tower, and so on. These landmarks serve as a backdrop for the train model while offering viewers a visual tour of Wuhan's architectural treasures.

Da Xiong purchased these 1:150 building and railway models and assembled them on his own. “The Yellow Crane Tower was the most intricate, requiring thousands of parts that took a month to assemble.” He said that from the initial sketch in 2022 to the final construction, the miniature sand table landscape has been a year-long project of passion, which was realized during his spare time. It is now gaining a great popularity among train enthusiasts many of whom pop by to test run the tracks with their own train models.

“Train models are a very niche interest. The process of building the sand table not only provides an outlet for my stress, but more importantly, it realizes my dreams as a train enthusiast.” Da Xiong explained with a smile.
