Jimu News (Reporter Rong Yu) “Hubei drum, so perfectly round, it emerges amidst the fields of Huangxiao. By day, I carry it on my back; at night, it becomes my pillow.” On the afternoon of July 16th, the crisp voices of a dozen children echoed from the activity room of Liujiadun Community Neighborhood Committee in Wuhan’s Dongxihu District. They were reciting the iconic tune Perfectly Round Hubei Drums. Under the mentorship of Luo Aiguo, an inheritor of Hubei Dagu, the children are set to become “seeds” who will preserve the legacy of this national-level intangible culture.
Yu Jiayi, a third grader at Yuanjing Elementary School, was the first to raise her hand to be the lead singer. She told the Jimu News reporter that her father is very fond of the Hubei Dagu. “One time he played it for me at home, and I quite liked it. This time he signed me up to participate in the event, and since I was hoping to showcase my talents, I raised my hand and volunteered to perform on stage.”
Yu Jiayi, who has always been passionate about singing, said: “Hubei Dagu (a traditional Chinese rhythmic speaking art accompanied by drums) is quite difficult to perform because its tones are even more complex than singing. But I feel like I did pretty well during my performance.”
With more children like Yu Jiayi boldly trying the Hubei Dagu, Luo Aiguo feels even more motivated to spread this invaluable tradition. As the last apprentice of Zhang Mingzhi, the renowned “Master of Hubei Dagu”, Luo Aiguo has been busy this summer vacation introducing Hubei Dagu to primary school students.
In the interview with Jimu News, Luo Aiguo expressed that when he became Zhang Mingzhi’s apprentice, his mentor told him he must shoulder the responsibility of inspiring everyone around him to learn about Hubei Dagu and develop a deep love for it. Luo has kept Mr. Zhang’s words close to his heart.
According to Luo Aiguo, over the past month, he has conducted similar classes on intangible culture in 10 communities within Dongxihu District. After sharing the artistic charm of the Hubei Dagu with hundreds of elementary school students, Luo Aiguo is delighted to witness gen-alpha’s deep fascination for the Hubei Dagu. “Some children said that their grandfathers and fathers can perform Hubei Dagu, and I said, ‘Now I will teach you, so you can learn to sing it too!’”
Luo Aiguo believes that the intangible cultural heritage classes must not merely teach the children the tunes and lyrics, but also introduce the history of the Hubei Dagu. “To be honest, this generation is somewhat distant from the Hubei Dagu, so I want to pass on and share as much as I know with them.”
