The Writings on the Wall Left by the Old Man Before his Death
Jimu News published the article on April 15, through which countless netizens became acquainted with the story of the elderly Zhang Fuqing and his Shanxi-style rural courtyard. It described the writings left by the farmer on the walls, door frames, and beams in his courtyard before his death. He documented mundane activities such as his farming schedules and loans, as well as questions like “How big is the universe?”.“This reminds me of my recent trip to the Gansu Bamboo Slips Museum in Lanzhou(the capital city of Gansu Province), where I saw bamboo slips dating back over 2,000 years to the Han Dynasty. People of that time used writings to document their lives on these bamboo slips. Seeing these bamboo letters from the past right in front of mew as truly astonishing,”said Professor Xiao Jun. He added that the elderly man’s writings allow us to see how people nowadays write family letters. What he documented was his life, his advice to his family, his living environment and his social life.It is truly a dialogue that transcends time and space.

“From the perspective of passing down his reflections, this elderly manu sed the items available in his daily life to record his life. He fully utilized every material object as a means to document his story,”said Professor Xiao. “I suppose that if he could use the sky, he would fill the entire sky with his writings as well.”
Xiao Jun believes that the elderly man’s use of any object he could find, from brick walls to doors, is proof of his creative and easy-going spirit. Through the Jimu News article, the words of the elderly man had now been transformed and presented to the public, enabling more people to read his story and empathize with it. As the relatable sentiments behind the elderly man’s writings and online reports gain public attention, the original article is taking on an even profound meaning.
From the perspective of media coverage, Prof. Xiao suggested that the writings as well as the objects that he wrote on could be displayed online, essentially creating an online museum that will allow more people to read this silent book of home letters and experience the beauty of life.
