“Teacher, this watermelon sounds like a drum when Itap it,” said Xiao Yu (pseudonym), a 10-year-old elementary school student living in Baoxie Street, East Lake High-tech Development Zone, Wuhan. On September 3rd, he and 15 other children, led by their teachers from the Yihui Cultural Training School, visited an orchard to experience harvesting their own watermelons. The day prior, he had just attended his first drumming charity class of the semester, and was eager to practice his favorite drumming piece in hopes he could soon perform on stage. While harvesting the watermelons, he could not help but think of playing the drums.
Xiaoyu is a studentin theabove-mentioneddrum performing class, which he has been learning for nearly half a year. The school has over 20 long term students, one of whom has been at the school for over two years. All students are underprivileged children from various communities in the street and are all exempted from tuition fees. Cao Yin, head of the school, introduced that sincethe summer vacation of 2021 to date, a total of 1,588 charity art classes have been held, excludingsocial practice classes. He said, while the students may not engage in art-related job in the future, as long as these classes ignite their dreamsand confidenceandhelp them integrate into society, then their efforts are worthwhile.
A Young Music Enthusiast’s Decision to Pursue Charity Work
“I’m a young music enthusiast who did not pursue music fulltime.”This is how Cao Yin described himself in an interview with Jimu News at the end of August.
In 1988, Cao Yin was born toa farming family in Baoxie Street, bringing the family to a total of three children. After his father passed awayin 2003, his mother raised themalone. Fortunately, with the help of their neighbors, the family overcame their hardships and Cao Yin was admitted to university.
During timesof hardship, music providedcomfortto Cao Yin. “I’ve always been a fan of the Beyond band since I was a child,” he said. This led him to develop a love for the guitar, which he began learning to play in 2008.He participated in singing competitions held in his school, as well as events like the 20th Optics Valley Music Festival and Community Cultural Festival. He even worked for 10 months as a singer at a music bar on Guanshan Avenue. In total, his love formusic has spanned15 years.
In October 2020, Cao Yin and several of his fellow music lovers opened an art training school in Baoxie Street. Cao Yin said they did not intend to make a huge profit off the school, so the fees werenot high. At its peak, they had around 100 students. During non-teaching hours, they also provide the venue free of charge to local community art teams for practice.
In the summer of 2021, Cao Yin began to offer free art lessons to underprivileged children from various communities. Talking about his inspiration behind this decision, he shared a small incident he witnessed with the reporter. On the afternoon of December 27, 2020, just after 4 o’clock, the weather slightly chilly, he was singing and playing the guitar in front of the Jiulong Lake community. A mother walked by with two children. The older boy, who was around 13 years old and carrying a water bottle while pushing a child stroller, could not resist stopping when he heard Cao Yin sing. He expressed his desire to learn the guitar to his mother, who declined his request.
“Initially, I thought the little boy was a bit rebellious, only later did I learn from the dialogue between him and his mother that his father provided car-hailing services and the burden of raising two children was heavy. In the end he left reluctantly.”
This incident deeply moved Cao Yin. He said, “The community’s cultural center happened to have available teaching space, and I had access to teaching resources. Perhaps I could do something.” After consulting with his partners, Cao Yin decided to offer art-related charity classes for underprivileged children.
Children Who Kept their Heads Down and Rarely Spoke in Class
Cao Yin’s primary occupation was community service. He learnedthrough relevant departments in the area that there was a total of 147 registered underprivileged children in the area. These children either came from families receiving government assistance, were orphans, had disabilities, or were autistic. Most of them were introverted and struggled integrating into society out of fear ofcommunicating with others and participatingin group activities.
Originally, Cao Yin intended to enroll 12 underprivileged students. However, after gaining a better understanding of the overall situation of registered underprivileged children in the community, he decided to increase the number to 25.
While the children could learn art for free, theteachers had to make a living. According to industry norms, fees are charged in accordance with the number of studentsin each lesson. After discussing with several collaborating teachers, they were all supportive and expressed their willingness to lower theclassfees. Drum teacher, Feng Bo, is a member of the Hubei Percussion Association and also happens to be resident in BaoxieStreet. He stated seeing the children reminded him of his own childhoodstruggles, and he was thus willing to teach them so that they could enjoy a childhood filled with music.
The first class began during the summer vacation of 2021, and nine underprivileged children attended. Feng Bo recalls that the children hardly spoke, kept their heads down, and lacked self-confidence. Based on their interests, they were placed in regular art classes such as drumming and guitar.
As there was no charge, the children could easily give up after the initial novelty wore off. Cao Yin then talked to the teachers, advising them to stimulate the children’s interest and encourage them to cherish the opportunity as well as to persevere in their studies.
Encouraging Students to Perform on Stage Besides Attending Classes
From late June 2021 to the summer of 2023, a total of 1588 charity classes were conducted, benefiting 25 underprivileged children. Over time, Cao Yin, the teachers, and parents began to notice positive changes occurring in some of the children.
For example, Xiaoyu, a 10-year-old child from a low-income family, enrolled in drum lessons on the recommendation of the community. He was generally ill-disciplined and frequently played video games. To encourage him into concentrating on his classes, the teacher recognized his love for gaming and downloaded electronic drumming learning software for him. Xiaoyu developed an interest and gradually gave up the aid of electronic drum softwareas he was able to play songs like Our Time, Half-Life Snowand Tinker Bell from memory. In order to attend music lessons, he no longer needed his mother or disabled grandfather to accompany him and would walk to school on his own.
When he returned home, Xiaoyu willingly shared with his family his experiences in class, from his teacher praising him for learning a new song to making new friends. Xiao Yu’s mother, Ms. Yan, was pleased with the changes in her son, “My son told me that the school is going to hold a charity show in September and October, and he wants to practice his piece well and hopefully perform on stage.” She was looking forward to seeing her son’s performance.
Kong Yue, the art teacher, shared that a 10-year-old girl named Xiao Yue (pseudonym), who has autism, has been studying art for free at the school for almost half a year. Initially, she did not enjoy interacting with others and preferred to play with her fingers in a corner. Through the care and encouragement of the teacher, “she has become more cheerful, started talking more, and has gradually become less isolated and closed-off,” said Kong Yue.
Cao Yinadditionallythought of using a talent show to encourage the children to showcasethemselveson stage. At the end of 2022, the school held a charity performance on the big stage in Jiulong Lake Square. Representatives from the underprivileged students in the drumming, guitar, and dance classes participated in the show. Since then, these underprivileged children have been seen at various community events, such asthe Children’s Day performance of the International Talent Community. The children, brimming with newfound confidence, shine on stage, as the applause of residents or parents resounds from the audience below.

Helpingchildren integrate into society
The communities of Baoxie Street generally supportedthe charity classes launched by Cao Yin.They provided venues, and recommended underprivileged children to the classes. Wu Changkun, secretary of Wanniantai Community, revealed that the community had selected and recommended six children to attendthe charity classes since last year. The parents’ feedback has been quite positive, with some saying that their children have become more outgoing. The positive changes in the children’s confidence and openness have inspired Cao Yin to seek ways to consolidate more resources and continue the charity classes in the long term.
Atthe beginning of this year, with the coordination of the street’s community service center and relevant departments, the “Tencent Charity Five Communities Joint Home Assistance Station” project initiated by Tencent Charity Foundation in collaboration with the Hubei Charity Federation, under the sub-project “Using Music to Illuminate Children’s Dreams,” decided to collaborate with Cao Yin in his charity classes. This initiative aims to ensure the healthy development of underprivileged children in the community.
As the project contractor, Li Siwei, chairman of Xinghan Social Work Service Center of East Lake High-tech Development Zone, revealed that upon learning ofCao Yin’s charityclasses, he felt it was in line with the service objectivesof Tencent public welfare projects.Hence,he implemented the Tencent public welfare projects in theBaoxie streetofthe Optical Valley area. Li Siwei further statedthe “Using Music to Illuminate Children’s Dreams”program intends to addmore musical instruments to schools, subsidize existing teachers, and plan more activities to help children integrate into society. Starting from the Optics Valley Youth Charity Market on April 28 this year, the program hassuccessively carried out a series of activities such as project publicity and fundraising, home visits to underprivileged children, summer courses and social integration practices.
With the support of the community, since last year, Cao Yin, together with social work organizations, public welfare funds and other social resources, hasconducted educational experiments, tree planting events, book donations, crafting workshops, summer water activities, free movie screenings, and more since last year. These activities have helped underprivileged children interact with society and explore the world. “Before and after each moviescreening, we engage in interactive sessions. While respecting privacy, we invite underprivileged children to participate, either by performing, sharing their dreams, or taking part in other activities,” Cao Yin mentioned. During one summer event, a child from an underprivileged background expressed a desire to take a high-speed train (Fuxing Hao) to Beijing to see the Tiananmen Square during the flag-raising ceremony, visit the Monument to the People’s Heroes, and explore the location of the Lugou Bridge Incident.
Cao said he cannot tell whether these children will pursue a career in the arts in the future. However, as long as their actions can help the childrenbecome optimisticand confident, pursue their dreams and integrate into society, he considers it to be enough.
