China’s GDP in the third quarter reported a lower-than-expected 4.9 percent year-on-year growth yesterday. It was much lower than the 7.9 percent growth rate for the second quarter and the 12.7 percent growth for the first half of the year.
Although the economic growth suffered hurt from power shortages, supply bottlenecks and sporadic Covid-19 outbreaks, the National Bureau of Statistics reassured that China will still be able to achieve full-year development goals.
Impacted by the power crunch, industrial production growth slumped to 3.1 percent year on year in September from 5.3 percent in August, marking the slowest growth since March 2020. A closer look at industrial production in the first three quarters shows that the value-added of high-tech manufacturing went up by 20.1 percent, driven by a 172.5 percent surge in the production of new-energy automobiles.
Meanwhile, retail sales rebounded to a stronger-than-expected 4.4 percent year-on-year growth in September from a mere 2.5 percent in August, and hit a rate of 16.4 percent during the first nine months. It’s worth noting that online retail sales saw an 18.5 percent jump during the same period. However, a looming epidemic still clouds the outlook for much anticipated rebound in consumption in the months to come.

根据国家统计局10月18日发布的数据，三季度国内生产总值同比增长4.9%，略低于预期。然而，这一数字是2020年第三季度以来最低，不仅低于上一季度7.9%的增长，更远低于12.7%的一季度增长。
国家统计局新闻发言人付凌晖在记者会中表示，前三季度，面对复杂严峻的国内外环境，国民经济持续恢复发展，主要宏观指标总体处于合理区间，但中国有能力有条件完成全年经济社会发展的预期目标任务。
另外，9月份规模以上工业增加值同比增长3.1%，低于8月的5.3%，为2020年3月以来最低。前三季度，全国规模以上工业增加值同比增长11.8%。其中，高技术制造业增加值同比增长20.1%，新能源汽车产量同比增加172.5%。
而随着双循环的深化和国内疫情的平稳，消费市场继续复苏，起色明显。前三季度社会消费品零售总额318057亿元，同比增长16.4%。9月份，社会消费品零售总额36833亿元，同比增长4.4%，比上月加快1.9个百分点。其中，全国网上零售额91871亿元，同比增长18.5%。但疫情仍时有反复，给未来几个月消费反弹预期蒙上一层阴影。

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced on Monday the 19 eligible banks in Hong Kong which can launch the Cross-boundary Wealth Management Connect (WMC) services. These banks, together with their respective mainland partner banks, can start providing cross-boundary wealth management services starting today.

Fears have grown that chain of transmission may further extend after more people in the same tour group from Shanghai to northwestern provinces tested positive for the virus. The Chinese mainland reported another 9 local infections yesterday, with most from the northwestern provinces of Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia and Ningxia. The neighbouring Gansu province announced to halt cross-provincial travels as it closed all entertainment venues and tourism spots in part of the province.
“上海老年旅游团”传播链仍在延长，多地发现关联病例。全国昨日报告新增9例本土确诊病例（陕西5例，均在西安市；内蒙古2例，均在锡林郭勒盟；湖南1例，在长沙市；宁夏1例，在银川市）。临近的甘肃省则宣布紧急关停多地文旅场所，旅行社停止跨省业务。

Tencent has pushed aside Alibaba to become China’s most valuable brand, according to the 2021 Top 100 Most Valuable Chinese Brands released today by consulting firm Kantar BrandZ. Tencent’s brand values $280 billion, compared with second-ranked Alibaba at $202 billion, followed by Kweichow Moutai, Meituan and Huawei.

Chinese stocks closed higher on Tuesday with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index added 0.7 percent to 3593 points. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.04 percent up at 14499 points. The Hang Seng Index gained 1.49 percent to close at 25787 points.
