A “Black Monday” hit the Hong Kong stock market, as it plummeted to a one-year low right before the mid-autumn festival.

The Hang Seng Index shed 3.3 percent on Monday, weighed down by property, insurers and tech companies, as the benchmark index retreated to the lowest level in nearly a year.

Hong Kong real estate companies took the brunt of selling as traders speculated China will extend its property clampdown to the financial hub, with the Hang Seng Property Index tumbling 6.7 percent for its biggest drop since May 2020. Henderson Land plunged 13 percent and Sun Hung Kai Properties sank 10 percent, the most since 2012. Intensifying concerns about China Evergrande Group’s debt crisis dragged down everything from bank stocks to Ping An Insurance and high-yield dollar bonds. One little-known Chinese property developer plunged 87 percent before shares were halted.

The tech sector was also sluggish as multiple internet giants dropped, including Tencent, Kuaishou, JD.com and Bilibili. The Hang Seng Tech Index lost 2.8 percent.

Experts said that the fluctuation of the Hong Kong stock market are the result of overseas investors’ excessive worries over the domestic economy and policies, especially in the property markets. In the U.S., the coming Federal Reserve meeting that could provide clues on the central bank’s timeline for cutting stimulus package also infected global markets.

However, the drops in major overseas stock indexes are unlikely to have a huge impact on China’s A-share market, thanks to its relative independence and adequate liquidity, analysts said. The A-share market will continue to be the major channel for household investment in the mid-to-long term, with healthcare, new energy, technology and consumption providing the most opportunities.
