“要不是你，这个伢就完了！”3月7日下午，武汉市武昌区黄花矶江滩边，一名年轻男子往江中走去。在武汉出差的通山县女教师邓智慧和同事目睹后，不会游泳的她不顾寒冷和危险，冲入江水中，将男子救上岸来。
“If it weren't for you, this young man would be gone!” On the afternoon of March 7, a young man walked into the Yangtze River from the Huanghuaji Riverbank in Wuchang District, Wuhan. Deng Zhihui, who was on aworktrip in Wuhan with her colleague, witnessed the scene. Unfazed by the cold and potential risks, Deng, a poor swimmer,rushed into the water to pull the man to safety.

3月8日，下水救人的邓智慧老师告诉极目新闻记者，她是通山县新时代高级中学的一名音乐和心理教师，今年27岁，来自湖南邵阳。3月7日上午，她和同事谭品腾老师受学校委派，前往湖北第二师范学院参加校园招聘会。当日14时许，两人午餐后在武昌黄花矶江滩散步，准备前往附近的武汉音乐学院继续招聘工作。散步过程中，他们发现一名年轻男子站在江边的浅水中。起初，她以为该男子在玩水，但继续观察时发现男子精神状态不好，脚步一步一停留地走向深水区。
Deng Zhihui, a 27-year-old music and psychology teacher from New Era High School of Tongshan County in Hubei Province, explained tojournalistsfrom Jimu News that she and her colleague, Tan Pinteng, were in Wuhan to attend an on-campus job fair at HubeiUniversityof Education on March 7. Around 14:00 after lunch, they were strolling down the riverbank before heading to their next stop - Wuhan Conservatory of Music, when they noticed a man standing in shallow water. Mistakenly assuming he was dabbling, they soon realized his fragile mental state as he staggered into the deeper area.
“他的动作不对劲，我下去看一下。”邓智慧跟同事说。她在靠近男子的过程中听到现场有音乐在播放，靠近后她看到音乐声是从岸边的一部手机里传出的，应该是下水男子的手机。她立即警觉起来，拿出自己的手机，暗示谭老师马上报警，谭老师立即报了警。
“Something’s wrong with him. I’ll go check on him.” Deng told her colleague. Approaching the man, she heard music playing from a phone on the bank—likely belonging to the man. Sensing urgency, she signaled Tan to call the police.
此时，江水已经淹到男子的腰部，他试图躺下身子。看到情况危急，邓智慧来不及等待救援，立即脱掉了自己的外套和裤子，仅身着内衣，冲进江水里。当她靠近对方，双方距离约一米远的时候，伸手尝试了两次后终于拽住了对方的衣服。
By then, the river had reached the man’s waist, and he was attempting to lie down. Time is of the essence and Deng could not wait until rescuecrewarrived. Without hesitation, Deng took off her coat and trousers and plunged into the water with only her undergarments. Struggling to reach him, she finally grasped his clothing from a meter away.
“发生了什么事情啊？你有什么事情跟姐姐说，姐姐应该可以帮助你的。”邓智慧温柔耐心地开导男子，但男子只是摇头并流泪，仍用力地走向深水区。“你再用力往前走的话，姐姐也会被带下去的，前面水很深。”此时，邓智慧在水中滑了一下。“我要摔倒了，你扶一下我！”她趁机向对方示弱。听到邓智慧的话后，男子转过身来，扶住了她。趁此机会，邓智慧拉住男子，将他拉回岸边。
“What’s going on? You can talk to me—maybe I can helpyou.”Deng Zhihui gently urgedthe young man, who simply shook his head in tears while wading towardsthedeeper area oftheriver. “If you go any farther, the current will dragus both down,”she cautioned.After these words, Dengstumbledon the riverbed. “I’m losing balance! Help me!” Her strategicplea worked—the man turned back to brace her, Deng seizedthis opportunityand pulled him back toward the shore.
上岸后，邓智慧轻轻拍打男子的背部，不停地安慰他。不顾自己还光着脚，赶紧帮男子拧干湿透的衣服。交流中，男子只是称自己来自湖南长沙，今年20岁，不是附近的学生。
On shore, Deng comforted the shivering man while gently patting his back. She helped wring out his soaked clothes despite standing barefooted herself. The man identified himself as a 20-year-old from Changsha, Hunan, without giving further details.
就在此时，几名救援队的队员赶到了现场，并展开后续援助。
At that moment, the rescue team arrived and took over the rescue.
“我不会游泳，下水的时候只想着救人，没有想这么多。”邓智慧表示，当时的水温比较冷，她也顾不上这些。
“I can’t swim—I just acted on instinct,”Deng later confessed. With the frigid water temperatures，she could not care more.
武汉长江救援志愿队副秘书长袁国华介绍，在接到邓智慧老师同事谭品腾的求助后，多名队员立即赶到现场将情绪激动的被救男子带回基地，为他换上干爽的衣物，递上热气腾腾的热水，用温暖的话语耐心安抚他。随后，男子被警方接走。
Yuan Guohua, Deputy Secretary-General of the Wuhan Yangtze River Rescue Volunteer Team, recounted how the team rushed to the scene and brought the young man back to base after they received the emergency call from Tan Pinteng, Deng’s colleague. At their base, the team provided dry clothes, hot water, and emotional support to the distraught man until he was transferred to the local police.
“当时如果不是邓智慧老师的及时出手，后果将不堪设想。”袁国华表示。
“This could have ended tragically without Ms. Deng’s timely action.”Yuan emphasized.
