The artist from Haiti——Manuel Mathieu
MenMen
About Death, Sex and Time
When faced with Manuel Mathieu's works, the audience can feel its complicated emotion and the countless unspoken stories featured within. In Mathieu’s view, art is the product of a mutual feeling between people; if something can be described in words, then there is no need for painting to convey it again. So, why draw? It is to arouse the emotional sensitivity of the audience beyond language. He believes that his paintings are more likely to convey a feeling and an emotional connection through his personal experience and story, without introducing specific content into them.

Manuel Mathieu was born in Haiti, studied in London, and now lives in Montreal. He thus has multiple cultural, regional and philosophical identities. However, the character of his works does not betray his background or his political affiliation, but always maintains a kind of internal self-sufficiency.
‘When I am painting I am trying to access several dimensions’, is what Mathieu wrote on his social media. His personal experience, national history and educational background gradually enrich his work. When asked to describe his work in three words, Manuel Mathieu mentioned ‘time, death and sex’. Sex is the source of everything, it is a connection between oneself as an individual and the whole world. Death represents the end of everything, while time is the process of connection between sex and death. From beginning to end, it is like an omnipotent container. These three elements form a closed loop, and then a world onto themselves So, the answer to what Mathieu is painting is self-evident.

Art is to leave the evidence that once existed
When it comes to Haiti, most people are not familiar with it, and only know it is a remote and mysterious country. It has been colonized by Spain and France for many years. Through more than 200 years of unremitting efforts, the brave and resolute Haitian people have finally gained their freedom. It is the first independent republic in Latin America and the first black republic in the world.
Manuel Mathieu A revolutionary thought 68x72inches Mixed Media 2018
In 1986, Haiti had just finished the “Duvalier era”, its darkest and most brutal historical period. Although Mathieu's parents were still traumatized by the ‘post dictatorship period’, Mathieu was fortunately born in an enlightened and harmonious family. Named after the protagonist in Jacques Roumain’s 1941 seminal Haitian novel “Gouverneurs de la Rosée” (“Masters of the Dew), Manuel Mathieu received a good education and was dotted on by his family, He spent his happy childhood in a democratic environment. However, when his sense of independence and self-consciousness started to develop, Mathieu inevitably became a ‘problem teenager’ during the peak of adolescence and began to show signs of arrogance. But this laid the ground for his later evolution into an artist. During this time, Mathieu’s uncle, the famous Haitian artist Mario Benjamin, showed him many catalogues including Goya, and told him, ‘you should go out, you have to go and see this world, visit the best art museums in the world to see more art, and then you will know who you are and what you are doing’. Since then, Manuel Mathieu has shown a strong affinity for painting.

London’s Goldsmiths College was a precious experience for Mathieu. Not only because he witnessed the different attitudes of artists from all over the world, but also because he was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident while studying for a master's degree, which resulted in memory loss and short-term vision loss. This accident became a turning point in his career. The intense mental pressure brought by his physical illness made his works more and more profound and historical, the bright and highly saturated colours were gradually covered by dark and varied painting techniques. Manuel Mathieu began to think more about the relationship between personal emotion and history, the country and its surroundings. As he said, ‘Art is to leave the evidence that once existed’.

Manuel Mathieu said that although in the future he seeks to use more media in his art such as porcelain, silk, installation and so on, there is no doubt that painting will remain permanent. ‘I'm still young and have unlimited possibilities. For me, the best time is always about to come.’
After receiving his Bachelors degree in Visual and Media Arts from the University of Québec in Montréal Mathieu went on to complete his Masters in Fine Arts at Goldsmiths University in London. He has exhibited internationally including at the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art) and Tiwani Gallery in London, the Grand Palais in Paris, the Museum of the Americas in Washington D.C and the Kavi Gupta Gallery in Chicago and his work features in national collections in both Canada and Haiti. He has participated in leading art fairs such as the Armory show and Frieze New York and Art Basel Miami. Mathieu lives and works in Montreal, Canada.
Manuel Mathieu is a young artist who is working at the crossroads of abstraction and figuration. His works not only contain the passion of Haitian folk art, but also permeate the language tension of Baconian painting. This kind of cultural interweaving reflects the artist’s transnational experience and characterizes his distinct visual language. Although artists create seemingly distorted visual and thrilling form in an abstract or figurative way they are also able to stimulate the audience's curiosity, allowing them to experience existence, changes, association, life and death. The artist allows the audience to meditate on the artistic imagination across cultural boundaries and also to experience and express the fascination of humanity.
