The mighty rivers that nurture life and create civilization have always been a grand subject frequently celebrated by artists. From "The Quiet Don", "The Vltava River" (From "My Motherland"), Satyajit Ray's "Song of the River" (From the "Apu Trilogy"), to "The Yellow River Chorus", rivers in various forms of artistic expression are often portrayed as epic masterpieces. Yet, stepping away from grand narratives to capture the past and present of river cultures from a microscopic perspective is no easy feat.
Photographer Cui Nan documented the two largest rivers in the U.S. and China respectively, the Mississippi River and the Yangtze River. He has the ability to delve into detailed subtleties, with an insightful humanistic sentiment, extracting the intricate textures of life and spatial details from vast geographical expanses. Cui Nan's river images, like modern idyllic visual poems, gently sing of the natural scenes on both sides of the riverbanks, and the genuine lives that have always sought peace and stability within them.
Many scenes are devoid of people, celebrating the natural evolution and passage of time in grand vistas, reminiscent of the visual flow of a Bach solo cello piece, a heart unburdened, peaceful and profound. In some unpopulated indoor spaces, through various detailed objects, human existence and life are reflected, be it sun-dried fish slices, oranges and stains on tables, miscellaneous items in a ship's cabin, or randomly placed figurines in a wooden basket.
Some images, especially those of the Mississippi River, seem to be the photographer's homage to Robert Frank's classic "The Americans". However, Frank's black and white photographs of the 1950s, which coldly observed post-WWII American society, were imbued with a sense of alienation, instability, and even surrealism. Cui Nan's river photography, shot on color film, offers a more gentle perspective, focusing on warmer, approachable humanistic landscapes, preventing viewers from despairing over society, much like the never-ending flow of a river, providing life with a strong sense of stability.
Cui Nan's training in photojournalism is indeed sharp. Even in his beautifully poetic visual essays, his professional ability ensures he's not content with merely tranquil scenes. Several images contain notable elements, such as cotton rolls piled by the Mississippi, both black and white individuals in parks, yellow-skinned women rehearsing collective dances, and clusters of people, all highlighting the social conditions of the river regions. The ancient cannon fort ruins and the monkey colonies that have lived there for generations by the Yangtze also carry multiple implications.
The most ordinary daily life scenes can be refined into poetic and musical images, but they can also reflect reality and the present. Cui Nan's river photography succinctly demonstrates the power and depth that documentary photography can still possess.
