Curious to learn about the young man’s story with China and his journey mastering the excruciatingly difficult Wuhan dialect, a Jimu News reporter met up with the online sensationin Qinglong Lane near the Yellow Crane Tower on July 22nd.

Sporting a pair ofsunglasses, casual clothesand skateboard shoes, Ou Fu met with the reporter, “Hi, my name is Ou Fu.” When the reporter expressed his shock at Ou Fu’s perfect Chinese which has zero hints of aforeign accent, Ou Fu chuckledand said, “I am a true native of Wuhan.”

Later, heeffortlessly conversed with the owner of astreet-side breakfast diner in an authenticWuhan dialect, saying, “I’d like a bowl of hot dry noodles with extra spice, please.”As the owner ladled a spoonful of chili onto his noodles, Ou Fu immediatelyadded, “Too little, you can add more.”

Once handed the noodles, Ou Fu held the bowl in one hand and dug in while simultaneously chatting with the reporter, “Thisis the authentic way to eat hot dry noodles, holding the bowland eating straight out of it!” When asked if he could handle the copious amounts ofchili, Ou Fu smiled and said that for him a meal isonly complete with a little spice, as he lovesspicy food and iswell accustomedto the strong flavors of Hubei cuisine.

OuFu told the reporter that he is 18 years oldand will enroll in his last yearof high school in the fall. Arabic by birth, his Chinesename is a transliterationfrom his Arabicname. When he was 2 years old, he moved with his parents after they relocated to Wuhan, where his father is currently employed as a teacher at Wuhan University of Technology. Hence, his fluency in Chinese stems from his early exposureto the language from his surroundings. Nonetheless, his initial desire tolearnthe Wuhan dialect was fueled by how cool he thought it was. Similar to his previous experience, he picked up the Wuhan dialect from watching videos online.

Surprisingly, Ou Fu has been learning the Wuhan dialect for merely a year. Ou Fu bashfullytouched his head and smiled, “Maybe I have a talent for languages. When I learna phrase in avideo, I repeat the phraseand eventually pick it up.”

Ou Fu told the reporter that his go tobreakfastfoodis hot dry noodles, and he never gets tired of them. “For breakfast, my top favorite is hot dry noodles. I also enjoy doupi (a savoury pan-fried pancake-like breakfast food madeof glutinous rice and minced meat), mianwo (a salty deep-fried doughnut-shaped snack), and love drinkingfresh soy milk and mung bean soup.” Ou Fu also shared his experience samplinghot dry noodlesaround the city, “After trying so many places, I think Liangdao Street and Shanhaiguan Road havethe besthot dry noodles. I personally think, ifyou’re going to eat hot dry noodles, you have to find stalls in those tiny alleyways. The flavor is typically more authentic with a perfect ratio of seasonings. Some add too much oil which makes the noodles greasy, and others use too little makingthem dry.”

“I enjoy a variety of foods, dry-sautéed shredded lotus root, stewed yellow croaker with pickled greens, stewed spare ribs with lotus roots, you name it.” When it comes to food, Ou Fu’s eyes light up as he showers praises over these classic Wuhan dishes, adding, he often takes his family and friends to restaurants to sample the delicacies.

Ou Fu came to Wuhan at the age of 2 and has been living in China for 16 years. He considers Wuhan hishome.Ou Fu remarked, even after his extensive travels to numerous cities around China, Wuhan remains his favorite. Occasionally, when he takes a taxi, many drivers recognize him and offer him a free ride. While speaking in the Wuhan dialect with the reporter, he instantly received the high praises of drivers nearby, who stated, “This young fella is pretty good. He can even speak Wuhan dialect.”

Ou Fu believesWuhanas a cityand its people are very welcomingof foreigners. “In your eyes, what is the city of Wuhan and its people like?”

After pausingfor several secondsto reflect on the question, Ou Fu replied in a serioustone, “Wuhan is a city known for its ports. Although most people speak loudly, they are very warm and enthusiastic. Wuhan has a magically calming effect on anyone, and the localshave a courteous temperament that makes them seem friendly and approachable. Wuhan is simply my favourite city.”

Even if I do become an online influencerin the future, my mindwill never run dry.”

In response to the mocking comments of many netizens who statehis Wuhan dialect is not authentic and is “bulk Wuhan dialect”, Ou Fu smiled and admitted that his Wuhan dialect is indeed not perfect, and there is still a plethora of phraseshe does not understand. “Certainwords are only known by local folks who’ve been here longer.” Ou Fu said he reminds his friends to speak with him in the Wuhan dialect.

When asked about his future plansfor college, Ou Fu said he has his eyes onWuhan University. He hopes to study Chinese language in depth, and continue to honehis Chinese, giving him a better shot at promoting Wuhan. “I hope that more people will fall in love with Wuhan through my videos.
