“Wow, that is a huge dragon boat!” On June 8, 2024, the first day of the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, the Dragon Boat Festival at Wuhan's Mulan Tianchi Scenic Area had officially commenced. To fully utilize traditional festivals and to pass on and promote excellent traditional Chinese culture, volunteers at Wuhan cultural tourism organized a voluntary event themed “Our Festivals - Dragon Boat Racing to Celebrate Dragon Boat Festival, Four Seasons ‘Village Evening’ to Remember Qu Yuan.” Children were invited to the Mulan Tianchi Scenic Area to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival, where they were taught how to talk about the Dragon Boat in English, while the volunteers simultaneously provided a bilingual live broadcast on the cultural background of the Dragon Boat Festival.
The Chu Feng Shui Water Ceremony is a customary sacrificial rite held during the Dragon Boat Festival, deeply rooted in Chu culture. Rituals such as inviting the dragon head, giving the dragon eyes, and tying red silk for blessings symbolize peace and good fortune. These activities left the children in attendance amazed and even more knowledgeable on Chinese traditional customs. Liu Wenmin, a cultural tourism volunteer and English-speaking tour guide from Wuhan, narrated the historical story of Qu Yuan and the customs of the Dragon Boat Festival while also teaching the children how they could introduce the festival in English. The children showed keen interest throughout the event. “I hope to pass down the cultural heritage of traditional festivals to the next generation and share it with tourists from all over the world”, said Liu.
Before the dragon boat race began, the volunteers invited the children to recite Chinese idioms containing the word “龙(dragon).” Subsequently, the volunteers introduced the English term for the Chinese dragon, “Loong,” helping the children differentiate between “the Chinese loong” and “the Western dragons”.
Amid the lively beating of gongs, drums and ecstatic shouts, the fierce dragon boat race set off. The volunteers from Wuhan Culture and Tourism led the children in cheering on the team of rowers in the dragon boat. “You see, the participants in the dragon-boat have three roles: the drummer, rower and helmsman. The rhythm of the drum sets the pace of the rowing...” While watching the race, Xu Chen, a volunteer from Wuhan Culture and Tourism, shared the ins and outs of rowing a dragon boat with the children.
“I think rowing a dragon boat is very interesting, and I want to participate in a dragon boat race when I grow up!” Pan Yiran from Wuhan Maple Leaf International School said.He further used the English he had learned during the activity to give an impromptu speech, in which he extended a warm welcome to overseas tourists to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival and watch dragon boats in Wuhan.
During the event, Wuhan Culture and Tourism volunteers also explained the Dragon Boat Festival culture in Chinese and English through a bilingual live broadcast, which received high ratings from the tourists and viewers in the live broadcast.
