本片是扬州报业传媒集团策划制作的“开放——扬州的城市气质”系列人物短片第一集。本系列聚焦扬州历史上具有“开眼看世界”精神的中外人物，讲述他们所代表的开创精神以及这种精神对于扬州的影响和在扬州的延续。

《海国图志》是一本具有划时代意义的巨著，其作者魏源是清代启蒙思想家、政治家、文学家，也是近代中国“睁眼看世界”的首批知识分子的代表。100多年前，魏源在扬州新仓巷37号的絜园内，完成了这部具有划时代意义的巨著的编撰。

时光荏苒，魏源的故事仍在扬州流传，魏源的精神也在扬州得到了继承和发展。专题片《世界不只如初见——在扬州》，还原了《海国图志》的诞生背景、创作历程，并邀请扬州多位专家学者出镜，讲述魏源以及《海国图志》与扬州的关系，阐述这部巨著对中国乃至世界的影响。

The film is the first episode in the "Openness—The Spirit of Yangzhou" short documentary series, planned and produced by the Yangzhou Newspaper Media Group. This series focuses on historical Chinese and international figures who embodied the spirit of "looking at the world with open eyes," showcasing their pioneering spirit, its impact on Yangzhou, and its continuation in the city.

Illustrated Treatise on the Maritime Kingdoms (Haiguo Tuzhi) is a groundbreaking masterpiece. Its author, Wei Yuan, was an Enlightenment thinker, politician, and literary scholar of the Qing Dynasty, and a representative of the first generation of Chinese intellectuals who sought to "open their eyes to the world." Over 100 years ago, Wei Yuan completed this epoch-making work at Jieyuan, No. 37 Xincang Alley in Yangzhou.

As time has passed, Wei Yuan's story continues to be told in Yangzhou, and his spirit has been inherited and developed here. The documentary "The World Beyond First Sight—The Illustrated Treatise on the Maritime Kingdoms in Yangzhou" reconstructs the background and process of the work's creation. It features prominent experts and scholars from Yangzhou, who discuss Wei Yuan, the connection between Haiguo Tuzhi and Yangzhou, and the impact of this monumental work on China and the world.
